On Dec. 1, Nintendo and developer Game Freak released their first \u201cPok\u00e9mon Scarlet\u201d and \u201cPok\u00e9mon Violet\u201d patch since the day one patch. The latest patch promised \u201cother select bug fixes,\u201d according to the official notes<\/a> released on their site. Players hoped this would address the game\u2019s many meme-worthy bugs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Currently, though, players can\u2019t agree on whether the patch has done anything to make the game look better. And neither can we. Take a look below and decide for yourself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nintendo\u2019s vagueness in their patch notes has caused a deluge of varying reports from players over whether performance \u2014 the frame rate, pop-ins, unloaded textures and more \u2014 has actually improved. While some claim<\/a> that open-world areas of the game, notably the earlier areas, have better frame rates, others say it\u2019s a placebo effect<\/a>, pointing to bad performance in the later areas players encounter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nintendo acknowledged a request from The Washington Post for clarification on what the patch had fixed, but didn\u2019t provide more detail in time for publication. We will update this story with their response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Regardless of what exactly about the game has been fixed, players are having fun trying to sort it out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s unclear what\u2019s causing these issues from a technical perspective. A popular theory, supported by reputable dataminers<\/a> and speedrunners of the games like Eddaket<\/a>, is that the game has a memory leak. In short: It\u2019s possible the Nintendo Switch\u2019s memory doesn\u2019t get cleared properly when players enter any city in-game. This means that the city assets never truly get unloaded, so as players continue to play the game, there\u2019s less and less available RAM on the Switch to load new assets. That would certainly explain the lower frame rates and pop-up issues, particularly in later cities the player comes across that don\u2019t have the assets loaded yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For now, and without Nintendo\u2019s input, players can\u2019t know for sure if a memory leak is truly the culprit. And unfortunately, they also can\u2019t tell what \u2014 if anything \u2014 the latest patch actually fixes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
