Rumors of Apple\u2019s mixed-reality technology and VR headset have been floating around for years, but things are finally coming into focus. In May, the company\u00a0demonstrated<\/a> a version of the headset to its board of directors. And now we\u2019re hearing Apple has a new name for the software as it inches closer to a release date.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Bloomberg\u2019s<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Mark Gurman, the internal name of \u201crealityOS\u201d we reported on<\/a> in August is changing internally to \u201cxrOS,\u201d which stands for extended reality. With a heavy mix of virtual and augmented reality experiences, not to mention virtual versions of all of Apple\u2019s most popular apps, \u201cextended reality\u201d makes sense.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Gurman reports that\u00a0a shell corporation named Deep Dive LLC has filed a trademark for the brand \u201cxrOS,\u201d suggesting a release date is on the horizon as Apple readies its Metaverse competitor.<\/p>\n

While we still don\u2019t much much about Apple\u2019s VR headset or what it\u2019ll be called, previous reports<\/a> suggest a high-end device that could cost anywhere from $2,000 to upwards of $3,000. And while that sounds expensive, the Meta Quest Pro is available at an eye-watering $1,500<\/a>, so nothing would surprise me.<\/p>\n

So, does this mean Apple is preparing to release its first AV\/VR headset? We\u2019re not sure. At the beginning of the year, Bloomberg<\/em> said<\/a>\u00a0Apple delayed the launch until 2023 due to\u00a0\u201cchallenges related to content and overheating,\u201d along with camera issues.<\/p>\n

With 2023 fast approaching, we could be on the verge of getting a taste of Apple\u2019s vision for AR and VR.<\/p>\n
