The serverless wave continues to wash over the enterprise based on its integration into areas like analytics.<\/p>\n

As a cloud-native, SaaS-based digital experience platform built on top of AWS, Arc XP,\u00a0a\u00a0division of The Washington Post, took the serverless route to boost its app-modernization journey based on a soaring customer base, according to Joe Croney<\/a> (pictured), vice president of technology and product engineering for Arc XP.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur choice to go\u00a0serverless\u00a0was driven by growth\u00a0and need to make sure we had exceptional experience, but most importantly that our engineers\u00a0could be focused on product development\u00a0and responding to what the market needed,\u201d Croney said.\u00a0\u201cArc XP was built for The Washington Post\u2019s\u00a0internal needs many years ago, and word got out about how great it was built on top of the AWS tech stack. And other publishers came\u00a0and started licensing the software.\u00a0We\u2019ve moved from there\u00a0to B2C commerce, as well as enterprise scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n

Croney spoke with theCUBE industry analysts\u00a0John Furrier<\/a> and Savannah Peterson<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0AWS re:Invent<\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Arc XP has a tradition of full-stack engineering that supports a serverless approach.\u00a0(* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Analytics come into the picture<\/h3>\n

As the media landscape continues to evolve, companies have to deal with business-model innovations and omnichannel distribution. Arc tackles these challenges through analytics that handle issues like user behaviors and the global distribution of content,\u00a0according to Croney.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about telling a story and having it go\u00a0across multi-channels, multi-sites,\u00a0and having the infrastructure both\u00a0technically and in the workflow tools is super critical for our customers,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it is a challenge that we receive well \u2014 applying AI\/ML to do detection,\u00a0suggest photos that might be appropriate based on what\u00a0a journalist or a marketer is writing in their story.\u00a0So, there are a lot of opportunities around that sort of data.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arc XP\u2019s roots in The Washington Post is its secret sauce, according to Croney, who said that going serverless enabled the engineering teams to be more innovative rather than deal with problems in this space.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally built by The Washington Post\u00a0for The Washington Post \u2026 so designed by digital storytellers, for storytelling,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cThe urgency of what it takes to get a story out,\u00a0the zero tolerance for the site going down \u2014 that DNA really enables our engineers to do great solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n
