As of October, the FCC said, SpaceX is operating a network of more than 3,500 Gen1 Starlink satellites out of the 4,425 it granted authorization for in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our action will allow SpaceX to begin deployment of Gen2 Starlink, which will bring next generation satellite broadband to Americans nationwide, including those living and working in areas traditionally unserved or underserved by terrestrial systems,&#8221; more powerful than Gen1 satellites but that doesn&#8217;t matter at all, at least for now: the satellites are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/08\/01\/spacex_satellite_brightness\/\">too heavy to launch<\/a>, and that&#8217;s straight from the mouth of Musk himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need Starship to get to orbit because it&#8217;s the only thing that can carry the Starlink 2 satellites,&#8221; While that&#8217;s less than the weight capacity of Falcon 9, SpaceX&#8217;s current operational rocket, Falcon&#8217;s max load would mean it couldn&#8217;t carry enough Starlink Gen2s to make the launch worth it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Starship has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/07\/12\/spacex_starship\/\">yet to reach orbit<\/a>, for now, and several of the test flights have ended in crashes or explosions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the end of October, NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/spacex-targeting-december-first-starship-launch-orbit-nasa-official-2022-10-31\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> it expected SpaceX to achieve an orbital Starship flight at some point this year, but we&#8217;re quickly running out of time. SpaceX hasn&#8217;t actually flown a Starship prototype since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/05\/06\/spacex_starship_lands_without_exploding\/\">May of last year<\/a>, although that test was largely successful.<\/p>\n<p>Starship is designed to be an all-in-one launch, travel and landing system, and along with ferrying satellites. It has been awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-awards-spacex-second-contract-option-for-artemis-moon-landing-0\" rel=\"nofollow\">contract by NASA<\/a> to deliver humans to the lunar surface as part of the Artemis III mission currently planned for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Conditional on that is SpaceX conducting an uncrewed demonstration mission to the Moon prior to Artemis III, giving Musk&#8217;s rocket company little time to go from sub-orbital to Moon-capable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/networks&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y4pJNeMsP90J@qHz4xNo-gAAAJY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/networks&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y4pJNeMsP90J@qHz4xNo-gAAAJY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Of interest is a quick note that the FCC made in its approval: SpaceX recently informed it that it plans to orbit Gen2 Starlink satellites using both Starship and Falcon 9 vehicles.
