They consisted of an image of an election worker with a death threat above it. While YouTube and TikTok caught the threatening ads, Facebook mostly let them through.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/personaltech&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y4ljhZ0-YXvc41HmBqMdlAAAAAs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/personaltech&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y4ljhZ0-YXvc41HmBqMdlAAAAAs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>In terms of monthly active users in the US, Facebook has about <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/247614\/number-of-monthly-active-facebook-users-worldwide\/\">266 million<\/a>, TikTok has about <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1100836\/number-of-us-tiktok-users\/\">94 million<\/a>, and YouTube has about <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/280685\/number-of-monthly-unique-youtube-users\/\">247 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to comment, a Meta spokesperson repeated the reply given to the researchers: &#8220;This is a small sample of ads that are not representative of what people see on our platforms. Content that incites violence against election workers or anyone else has no place on our apps and recent reporting has made clear that Meta\u2019s ability to deal with these issues effectively exceeds that of other platforms. We remain committed to continuing to improve our systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s an odd statement given that no one claims the majority of Facebook ads are death threats \u2013 the problem is that any death threats were approved for distribution. It&#8217;s as if the makers of Tylenol in 1982 had responded to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/health\/tylenol-murders-1982\">the seven fatalities linked to drug tampering<\/a> by observing that most people don&#8217;t get poisoned.<\/p>\n<p>As to whether recent reporting suggests Meta vets ads more effectively than rivals, the Global Witness and C4D team said they asked Meta to support its claim that it handles incitement to violence better than other platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Meta, they said, pointed to quotes culled from news reports \u2013 such as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/09\/technology\/midterms-election-misinformation.html\">this report<\/a> from the New York Times \u2013 indicating that the company devotes more resources to fighting manipulation than other platforms and that it fares better than alt-right platforms like Parler and Gab \u2013 not exactly known for their sensitivity to misinformation.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/personaltech&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y4ljhZ0-YXvc41HmBqMdlAAAAAs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/personaltech&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y4ljhZ0-YXvc41HmBqMdlAAAAAs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;While these assertions may be factual, they don\u2019t constitute evidence that Meta is better at detecting incitement to violence than other mainstream platforms,&#8221; the researchers said. &#8220;In addition, there should be no tolerance for failure before a major election, when tensions and potential for harm are high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Misinformation, on the other hand&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>However, Meta&#8217;s Facebook did come out looking better than TikTok when the same researchers looked at <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityfordemocracy.org\/tiktok-and-facebook-fail-to-detect-election-disinformation\">how Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube handled election misinformation<\/a> (rather than death threats) two months ago.<\/p>\n<p>In that study, TikTok was a disaster, approving 90 percent of ads containing false and misleading election information. Facebook was partially effective \u2013 for example, in one test, 20 percent of English disinformation ads were approved, and 50 percent of Spanish disinformation ads were approved.
