Speaking at the DealBook Summit today, Meta Platforms Inc. chief Mark Zuckerberg told the crowd that Apple Inc. being the gatekeeper of the app marketplace isn\u2019t good for anyone but Apple.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at all the major competing platforms that have existed \u2014 iOS, Android, Windows \u2014 Apple stands out,\u201d Zuckerberg (pictured) explained. \u201cIt is the only one where one company can control what apps get on the device. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s sustainable or good.\u201d<\/p>\n

This\u00a0wasn\u2019t the first time<\/a> Zuckerberg has criticized Apple\u2019s business model, and it likely won\u2019t be the last. He then went on to outline why Google LLC had a much better business model, explaining that it allows more freedom with its Android devices. \u201cThey\u2019ve always made it so you can sideload and have other app stores and work directly with phone manufacturers,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s also been our commitment in how we built up our VR and what we plan to do with our AR headsets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Firing arrows at how Apple does business seems to be a hobby for tech bosses these days. Just yesterday, Twitter Inc.\u2019s new owner Elon Musk suggested that he and Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook were locked in some kind of war<\/a> with each other. He alleged that Apple had threatened to remove Twitter from the App Store, after which, Musk\u2019s acolytes among the public and politicians started talking about the end of free speech in America.<\/p>\n

If there was a war, it was one of the shortest on record. Today, Musk took to Twitter to tell his brethren that he\u2019d just been given a tour around Apple\u2019s campus in Cupertino, and he and Cook had kissed and made up. \u201cWe resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store,\u201d Musk tweeted.<\/a> \u201cTim was clear that Apple never considered doing so.\u201d The two had apparently had a \u201cgood conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg may have felt emboldened by the fact that Cook had been fighting on two fronts, and he commented on Musk\u2019s new business, saying, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be very interesting to see how this plays out in terms of the approaches he\u2019s taking.\u201d He added, \u201cI would guess that not everything is going to work, but I think some things might work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg also talked about the metaverse. He\u2019s been criticized in the recent past for throwing too much at his dream of the metaverse. Even his investors warned him<\/a> not to put all his eggs in one basket. At the conference today, Zuckerberg said the metaverse is \u201cnot the majority of what we\u2019re doing,\u201d and the main focus, as always, is on \u201csocial media.\u201d<\/p>\n
