Invariably, I\u2019d leave that test drive with a smug grin. The bots were still a looooong way away. My job was secure.<\/p>\n<p>But last month, I was chatting with Paul Roetzer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingaiinstitute.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marketing AI Institute<\/a> and he gave me a wake-up call: \u201cI used to get those \u2018Oh, Wow\u2019 moments maybe twice a year,\u201d Paul said, \u201cThen it started being one a month. Now I learn about a new leap in AI capabilities pretty much every week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, but\u2026 <em>writing?<\/em> Sure, AI tools might be able to generate email subject lines. Or turn raw data into highly templated sports reports and financial updates. They\u2019re already doing that.<\/p>\n<p>But ideas? Style? Structure? Voice? No way.<\/p>\n<p>Then I tried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudowrite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudowrite<\/a>, an AI writing tool. Sudowrite doesn\u2019t claim to replace writers (yet). It\u2019s all about helping us jump-start our stories, get over our many blocks, accelerate the writing process and maybe find new angles.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so everything you\u2019ve just read was written 100% by me.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of this post (after this sentence) is written by (or <em>with\u2014an important distinction<\/em>) Sudowrite. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[My comments are in brackets and small changes are in bold]<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2013<\/p>\n<p>I decided to try Sudowrite just to see how well it works. I wrote the first few paragraphs and then handed it off to Sudowrite so it could write the rest of this post.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s it like? Kinda\u2026 trippy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>[Okay, that made me sit up a bit. The spelling of \u2018kinda\u201d\u2026 the ellipsis\u2026 \u201ctrippy\u201d\u2026 You know who writes like that?  Me.]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At first I was a little weirded out. The first sentences it wrote was a lot different than what I would have written. And I kinda went, \u201c<strong>Hah!<\/strong> This isn\u2019t going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I decided to sit back and just play around. The next section it wrote was noticeably more in my style and voice. <strong>I started to lean in<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I can see how some people would be totally freaked out by this thing.  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>[The original Sudowrite suggestion had, \u201cI can totally see\u201d. Two \u2018totally\u2019s. And what is this, <em>Friends<\/em>?]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I see this tool having potential as a way to kickstart a writer who\u2019s hit a block or is just frozen by fear. It\u2019s a tool as a tool and not a replacement <strong>(yet)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I can also see this being a way to get feedback on early drafts or story ideas.<\/p>\n<p>I did <strong>kind of<\/strong> write this post myself. In fact, I\u2019m still sitting at my desk as I write this. But if someone were to give me a chance to write a few paragraphs on something I know a lot about and then hand it over to Sudowrite\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>[For the next paragraphs, I\u2019m inserting both of Sudowrite\u2019s suggestions, with only tiny tweaks in bold: Here\u2019s option 1:]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s also a fun way to play with storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>If you have <strong>a topic<\/strong> you\u2019d like to write about, but are struggling to come up with something good to say, hand it over to Sudowrite. And here\u2019s option 2:]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m still not sure if I\u2019m comfortable with any of this.<strong> Aren\u2019t<\/strong> writers like magicians<strong>?<\/strong> Even if we know how it works, we like to preserve the illusion. It\u2019s one thing to use a thesaurus to spice up your writing. But to let a machine write entire paragraphs, sentences and even words \u2013 that seems a little messed up.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll use this tool too much. Even if it\u2019s a tool and not a writer, too much of this feels like<strong>\u2026<\/strong> cheating.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, I can totally see how someone who has a knack for writing but is a little afraid of the blank page could <s><strong>totally<\/strong><\/s> use this. That\u2019s the REAL promise of this tool.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a WYSIWYG editor, which is something we all wish we could have for our brains.<\/p>\n<p>You can check out this tool at http:\/\/sudowrite.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>[Hah! Actually, the bot got its own URL wrong (surowrite.com) but I think it earned that correction.]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p>Okay, it\u2019s back to me now.<\/p>\n<p>That experience surprised and, TBH, kind of shook me.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s nowhere near perfect. The voice still sounds like someone put bland robo-prose through a \u2018casualize\u2019 filter with the \u201cGenZ\u201d knob cranked up to 11.<\/p>\n<p>But still\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>That was a fucking bot.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe this is a bad example. Maybe the first thing most writers do is to get the tool to write about using Sudowrite to write a post. So maybe it\u2019s full of snazzy ways to handle that topic. ready to go.<\/p>\n<p>So I tried a bit on a different topic: sustainability in supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll write the first few sentences:<\/p>\n<p><em>For every product you see on the supermarket shelf, there\u2019s a long supply chain trailing off behind it, over the horizon. That supply chain emits carbon. Lots of carbon. If we\u2019re going to make any impact at all on climate change, we need to do something about that. We need to make our supply chains more sustainable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>[Now here\u2019s how Sudowrite continued\u2026 untouched by me:]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How? Well, for a start, we need to understand them. That\u2019s where an EU project called SupplyTrack comes in. SupplyTrack is developing a metric of sustainable supply chain performance, which it calls Sustainability in the Chain (SIC).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a few problems with sustainability metrics at the moment. First, there\u2019s no consensus about what exactly \u201csustainability\u201d means in this context. Secondly, there\u2019s no good data about the activity of supply chains. Thirdly, even if you know the carbon data, there\u2019s no agreed way to use it to rate the sustainability of a supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Supply Chain Carbon Footprinting \u2013 overcoming the challenges<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why SupplyTrack is gathering data in the two areas where it\u2019s been identified as being most problematic. The first is transparency. Gathering data is hard. You need a consistent methodology and you need to be consistent in your approach, which is hard to do if you\u2019re gathering data.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p>Okay, so\u2026 until I just \u201cwrote\u201d about it, I\u2019d never heard about SupplyTrack. <\/p>\n<p>Cue my favourite headline from The Onion:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"411\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/velocitypartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screenshot-2022-11-15-at-10.33.49.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21757\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you but I think I\u2019m going to remember this moment in the same way I remember (back in what, 1994?) the first time I saw a web page slowly fill up a Netscape browser. <\/p>\n<p>Something had tipped. <\/p>\n<p>The world was going off in this new direction.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, some idiot standing behind me said, \u201cHuh. Look how slow it is.
