With Intel planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/02\/15\/intel_buys_tower_semiconductor\/\">acquire Tower for $5.4 billion<\/a> early next year, Intel could end up owning a piece of the ISMC fab in Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p>The ISMC plant in Karnataka will focus on manufacturing 45nm to 65nm analog chips for the defense and automotive sectors, among others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/02\/ismc_india_chips\/\">As we&#8217;ve previously reported<\/a>, the ISMC fab is expected to create about 1,500 jobs, plus 10,000 indirect jobs because of the plant&#8217;s expected economic impact.<\/p>\n<p>ISMC and other companies planning fabs in India are hoping to get a slice of the $10 billion in chip subsidies the federal government has carved out to build the domestic semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/systems&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y4UtgM63lIbjI6bHHYeq8gAAAAg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/systems&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y4UtgM63lIbjI6bHHYeq8gAAAAg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>While India doesn&#8217;t have any chip manufacturing plants right now, the country has been a hub for chip design and other activities. Intel, for instance, has a sizable design and engineering presence, with 13,500 employees in the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/business\/2022\/jun\/25\/intel-unveils-new-design-and-engineering-centre-in-bengaluru-can-house-2000-employees-2469639.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">as of last year<\/a>. Other chip companies in India include MediaTek, TSMC, and NXP Semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s drive to become a chip-making hub is apparently benefiting from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/11\/28\/beijing_ramping_up_semiconductors\/\">United States&#8217; growing efforts to hamper China&#8217;s semiconductor industry<\/a>.
