Despite spreadsheets being fundamental in the data space, visibility and trust are key challenges.<\/p>\n

To address this need, Alation launched Connected Sheets, which incorporates data intelligence and uses a data catalog that is connected to Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel, according to Raj Gossain<\/a> (pictured), chief product officer at Alation Inc.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognize that spreadsheets are really the dark matter\u00a0of the data universe,\u201d he said. \u201cOver 78 million people use spreadsheets\u00a0on a regular basis to drive critical business analysis. So we wanted to bring the power\u00a0of the Alation Data Intelligence platform\u00a0to business users where they spend most of their time. And so we\u2019re launching a brand new product called Alation Connected Sheets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gossain spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante<\/a> during a recent CUBE Conversation, during an exclusive interview on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed the how Alation Connected Sheets incorporates data intelligence, trust and visibility into spreadsheets. (* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Bringing data intelligence to business users<\/h3>\n

Based on the wide usage of spreadsheets, integrating them with data intelligence is a game-changer, according to Gossain. So, any business users should be able to utilize them with ease.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur vision, our aspiration at Alation\u00a0is to really bring data intelligence to any business user,\u201d he stated.\u00a0\u201cSo it\u2019s a big part of our strategy to make sure\u00a0that the insights from the Alation catalog and platform\u00a0can find their way into tools like Excel and Google Sheets.\u201d<\/p>\n

By incorporating descriptive information into spreadsheets, Alation Connected Sheets makes access to trusted and governed data a possibility. This turns spreadsheets into an asset rather than a risk factor, Gossain pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe built the leading data intelligence platform\u00a0and the leading data catalog,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cAnd one of the benefits of that catalog is where you have\u00a0visibility into all of the trusted, governed data sources\u00a0that a data organization cares about,\u00a0whether it\u2019s enterprise warehouses\u00a0like Snowflake or Redshift,\u00a0databases like SQL Server, Google BigQuery, what have you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Knowing the source of data is critical for enhanced decision-making. Therefore, Alation Connected Sheets prompts this objective, making data well-governed, reliable and trusted, Gossain pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big challenges\u00a0that we see when we talk to data organizations\u00a0are how do they understand where the data came from?\u00a0Is it trusted?\u00a0Is it reusable?\u201d he stated. \u201cAnd if you look at where most users\u00a0that use spreadsheets get the data\u00a0to power their spreadsheets,\u00a0maybe it\u2019s a CSV download from a database. And then you have no idea where the data came from\u00a0and where it\u2019s going.\u00a0Or even worse, it\u2019s copying and pasting data\u00a0from other spreadsheets.\u201d<\/p>\n
