The final miles for packages to your door (or your car to a store) are a biggie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>It\u2019s not your fault: <\/b>Your choices matter, but slowing climate change is not up to you. Companies want you to buy without thinking about your wallet, your carbon footprint or anything else.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Something hopeful: <\/b>A shopping website in Mexico found that the vast majority of people were willing to wait for their orders when they were told that doing so would save a certain number of trees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><i><b>This article is a preview of The Tech Friend newsletter. <\/b><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/newsletters\/the-tech-friend\/?method=SURL&amp;location=ART&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_9\"><i><b>Sign up here<\/b><\/i><\/a><i><b> to get it in your inbox on Tuesdays and Fridays.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Here\u2019s a north star to guide you to planet-conscious shopping: A choice that involves the fewest miles driven to your door is generally better for the environment. That might be buying online or in a store \u2014 or better yet, buying nothing at all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Figuring that out is tricky and depends on your personal circumstances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">If one courier van is dropping off packages to a bunch of people on your street in a single trip, that can produce fewer climate-warming emissions than all those neighbors driving back and forth to stores far away, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/sctlctr\/about-us\/faculty-professional-staff\/dr-anne-goodchild\">Anne Goodchild<\/a>, a University of Washington professor who studies the climate emissions of transportation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But it\u2019s not that simple.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Goodchild told me that if you buy some of the items on your weekly grocery list online and still drive to the supermarket for the rest, those two shopping moments could produce more climate-harming emissions than a single delivery or drive. If you ordered a new blender for delivery instead of buying one on the drive home from work, that might be worse for the environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Other factors like the type of car you drive, where your products are coming from and whether your neighborhood is spread out or has many homes close together also affect the climate emissions produced. I know this feels <i>tiring. <\/i>I don\u2019t blame you if you just want to buy dog food and not think so hard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But you don\u2019t have to be perfect or crunch your personal CO2 emissions to shop online while being a little gentler on the planet. Here is what you can do:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h4 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"TJWJJAGDUVAIFH6JMTZZX7C4PE\">\n<p>Slower delivery is good. Buying less stuff is even better.<\/p>\n<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Websites often don\u2019t give you the option, but when they do, Goodchild advised opting for delivery times that take multiple days rather than one or two. Amazon started the go-go need for speed to your door, and many other websites have followed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">(Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Fast shipping at no additional cost is now what you expect but it has a cost. Slower delivery times allow delivery companies to bunch orders together, ship stuff by truck instead of planes and send vans stuffed with packages on routes that guzzle less gas. That\u2019s more sustainable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">If you\u2019re thinking, hahahahahaha, everyone wants things RIGHT NOW \u2026 When a Mexican retailer showed shoppers a message about how many trees might be saved by their choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/consumers-slower-deliveries-orders-11658150259\">90 percent of people said they were willing to wait<\/a> about five days, MIT researchers have explained. It was a small experiment, but one that showed people may be eager to protect the planet if it feels manageable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Companies will often choose the speediest delivery for you, but you can sometimes switch to slower delivery when you\u2019re checking out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Here are two examples from earlier this week on Amazon and Best Buy. The companies automatically picked the fastest delivery window, but you can instead click the option to wait a little longer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Goodchild\u2019s second recommendation is tough medicine: The most environmentally friendly shopping choice is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/2022\/02\/22\/climate-change-actions-carbon-footprint\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_32\"> buying nothing at all<\/a>. You don\u2019t have to renounce all your possessions or anything. It\u2019s about being more thoughtful and asking: Do I need this?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">One suggestion I heard was to try waiting 24 hours before clicking \u201cbuy.\u201d Maybe that gizmo you put in your virtual shopping cart while you were bored on Thanksgiving won\u2019t seem so exciting if you waited until today to check out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<h4 data-qa=\"article-header\" class=\" pb-sm pt-lgmod\" id=\"VTWS3QM53NEDFAGXGSMHSBRZUY\">\n<p>Companies (and your life) work against you.<\/p>\n<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Straight talk: The way we live is not conducive to slowing climate change. You might want or need to drive long distances for work, school or life. Electric cars are expensive to buy. We <i>need <\/i>stuff, and buying things in the most convenient way we can \u2014 of course we want that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Online shopping can also undermine your best intentions for your budget and the planet. It\u2019s so easy to buy and return that it\u2019s tough to be mindful about what or how you buy. And it\u2019s better for online stores if you turn off your brain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">We can adapt. And you are part of the picture but the responsibility for change is not yours alone. Real fixes will require global scale changes and a recognition that we need to work together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cWe know that we have a major problem with [carbon dioxide] production that is going to take all of our efforts to address. It\u2019s going to take personal responsibility, corporate responsibility, public policy,\u201d Goodchild said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s still going to be hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>And don\u2019t miss this: <\/b>Geoffrey A. (Yet.)<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Yes, I see you asking this question. I get it! Here are a few things you might want to know:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>The drama of Elon Musk\u2019s ownership is alluring: <\/b>Musk recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1593455727611215872\">said <\/a>that usage of Twitter hit record levels, maybe partly from people gravitating to Twitter to rubberneck at Twitter\u2019s chaos. (It\u2019s difficult to verify Musk\u2019s claims of Twitter usage.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>A majority of Twitter&#8217;s staff <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/17\/twitter-musk-easing-rto-order\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_49\"><b>were pushed out or quit<\/b><\/a><b> in the past few weeks. Won&#8217;t Twitter break?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Large internet sites tend to be resilient \u2014 until they\u2019re not. Sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/18\/twitter-death-watch-chaos-resignations\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_52\">told<\/a> The Post that complex systems like Twitter\u2019s can withstand minor things going wrong without users necessarily noticing. Glitches or temporary outages are not necessarily signs of doom. Over time, if technical mistakes and changes pile up and there aren\u2019t enough people to work on them, a lasting crash is possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>But look at that horrible tweet! <\/b>Some people appeared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/28\/musk-twitter-racist-posts\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_54\">emboldened<\/a> to spew toxic posts on Twitter after Musk took over, and some users and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/22\/twitter-advertiser-exodus-musk\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_54\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advertisers have pulled back<\/a>, at least temporarily. But Musk\u2019s ownership is energizing for others, and the impact on Twitter\u2019s user numbers and revenue might take a long time to understand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Ugly words, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/11\/11\/twitter-blue-checkmark\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_55\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">botched policies<\/a> and balky features were also fixtures of Twitter before Musk was the boss. It\u2019s tough to know whether something you find vile or stupid on Twitter is related to Musk\u2019s takeover or just Twitter being Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>If you\u2019re worried about Twitter, where else can you go? <\/b>Nothing is a perfect replacement, really. My colleague Heather Kelly has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/29\/twitter-alternatives\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_57\">written about the pros and cons of alternatives to Twitter<\/a> and what you might want to do if you have a Twitter account.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">If you\u2019ve heard about newer Twitter-like apps such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/guides\/tech\/what-is-hive-social-media-app\">Hive<\/a>, Mastodon and <a href=\"https:\/\/post.news\/\">Post.News<\/a>, they\u2019re probably not ready for most people right now. We here at The Post (erm, that\u2019s The Washington Post) will keep testing them out for you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Follow the money. <\/b>Twitter borrowed $13 billion for Musk\u2019s takeover of the company. And the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/elon-musks-twitter-takeover-seen-swelling-the-companys-debt-11666609106\">owes roughly $1 billion or more a year<\/a> just on interest from that debt. To buy Twitter, Musk also put in what was initially $25 billion of his own money, although it\u2019s possible that he brought in more investors to spread the load.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The bottom line: Twitter and Musk need a lot more cash coming in the door, far lower expenses or both. What we\u2019re seeing from Musk and the company is a mad dash <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/30\/technology\/elon-musk-twitter-debt.html\">to make Twitter\u2019s math work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><i><b>Help us help you. <\/b><\/i><i>What do you want to know about Twitter?
