Ukraine\u2019s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant \u2013 Europe’s largest such facility and one of the biggest of its kind in the world \u2013 caught fire on Thursday after being shelled by Russian military, according to Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba.<\/p>\n

He also warned the consequences of attacking the station could be dire:<\/p>\n

Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Fire has already broke out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chornobyl! Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!<\/p>\n

Kuleba’s claims were mirrored in a Telegram post<\/a> by Dmytro Orlov, mayor of a town called Enerhodar that is adjacent to the plant.<\/p>\n

The blaze was mentioned in a readout<\/a> of a Thursday conversation between United States President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

US outlet ABC News says Ukraine’s consulate in San Francisco claimed the slow-motion video below depicts strikes on the plant:<\/p>\n

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported<\/a> that Ukrainian authorities informed it Russian troops were “moving directly towards” the plant and that a battle was being waged at Enerhodar.<\/p>\n

That multiplicity of sources leaves The Register<\/i> with little doubt that Russian forces moved on Enerhodar and that the plant was assaulted.<\/p>\n
