The idea is that web applications should look and behave the same way across different devices and operating systems. These include: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/interop-2022\/#cascade-layers\">Cascade layers<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/interop-2022\/#color-spaces-and-css-color-functions\">Color spaces and CSS color functions<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/interop-2022\/#new-viewport-units\">New viewport units<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/interop-2022\/#scrolling\">Scrolling<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/interop-2022\/#subgrid\">Subgrid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Interop 2022 specs offer a way for firms that are ordinarily rivals to find common ground because they&#8217;re design-oriented and lack obvious privacy, security, or functional implications.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YiFeRzYfyBfCa6vUzy1K6wAAAAk&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YiFeRzYfyBfCa6vUzy1K6wAAAAk&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Other efforts to expand the capabilities of browsers through new APIs and features are sometimes met with indifference or antipathy by rival browser makers, particularly when the proposal has business model implications.<\/p>\n<p>Apple, for example, has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/02\/28\/apple_apps_challenge\/\" rel=\"noopener\">slow to implement certain web APIs<\/a> in Safari and WebKit that would help web apps compete against native iOS apps. Google, meanwhile, decided to come up with a new privacy-preserving way to deliver ads (its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/privacysandbox.com\/\">Privacy Sandbox<\/a>) after Apple, Brave, and Mozilla went on a web cookie diet. And then there was that time in 2019 when Google <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/09\/25\/google_privacy_wc3\/\" rel=\"noopener\">blocked a proposed revision<\/a> of the charter of the W3C&#8217;s Privacy Interest Group for fear the change would interfere with its ability to innovate.<\/p>\n<p>Only in the past year or so, as regulators have pressed both Apple and Google on competition issues, has there been more of an effort among the top browser makers to work together rather than race one another to deliver features that lack broad buy-in.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we have Apple web development evangelist Jen Simmons <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/12288\/working-together-on-interop-2022\/\">insisting<\/a>, &#8220;We care deeply about the health of the web, and interoperable implementations of web standards.&#8221; That&#8217;s just the opposite of what many web developers have been saying for years.<\/p>\n<p>The Interop 2022 test dashboard measures how browsers perform on the various benchmarks. With regard to stable browser releases, things look pretty bad. Chrome and Edge score 61 out of 100; Firefox scores 69; and Safari scores 50.
