Apple has always raised the bar for computer platforms with its accessibility features<\/a>, as shown by a feature that came with macOS\u00a010.15 Catalina<\/a>\u2014controlling your Mac with head gestures and facial expressions. Here\u2019s how to set it up.<\/p>\n

Enabling the Accessibility Features<\/h2>\n

There are two different features you\u2019ll need to enable to control your Mac with both facial expressions and head gestures. Both of these features will need access to your camera to work.<\/p>\n

To get there, click the Apple icon in the desktop\u2019s menu bar and then select \u201cSystem Preferences\u201d from the drop-down menu.<\/p>\n

In System Preferences, click the \u201cAccessibility\u201d option.<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

In the left-hand pane of the next screen, scroll down to the Motor group and click \u201cPointer Control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, select the \u201cAlternate Control Methods\u201d tab and then check the boxes next to \u201cEnable Alternate Pointer Actions\u201d and \u201cEnable Head Pointer.\u201d<\/p>\n

When you check the box next to each option, Mac will request permission to use your camera<\/a>. Give it permission and the features will be enabled.<\/p>\n

Now that you\u2019ve enabled each feature, you\u2019ll want to customize them a bit.<\/p>\n

Adjusting Facial Expressions and Switches<\/h2>\n

The Alternate Pointer Actions feature lets you use switches or facial expressions instead of mouse actions, such as right-click<\/a>, double-click, click-and-drag, etc. To customize the feature, click \u201cOptions\u201d next to where you enabled it.<\/p>\n

By default, only two switches are assigned\u2014F11 for Left Click and F12 for Right Click. To assign a new switch or facial expression, click the Plus \u201c+\u201d icon.<\/p>\n

Select whether you\u2019d like to assign a physical switch or facial expression and then click \u201cNext.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you selected \u201cPhysical Switch,\u201d you\u2019ll be asked to press your switch (key) first. Next, you\u2019ll be asked to Name your switch and assign an action to it. Click \u201cDone\u201d once you\u2019re finished.<\/p>\n

If you selected \u201cFacial Expression,\u201d you\u2019ll need to select a facial expression from the list of available options, and then assign an action to it.\u00a0Here\u2019s a list of all the facial expressions and actions you can assign.<\/p>\n
