They enable people to discover products and services from small businesses that may not have the ability to market them on broadcast television or other forms of media. They also enable non-profits, social causes and organizations to reach the people most likely to support and benefit from them, such as connecting people to fundraisers for charitable causes they care about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, we want to better match people\u2019s evolving expectations of how advertisers may reach them on our platform and address feedback from civil rights experts, policymakers and other stakeholders on the importance of preventing advertisers from abusing the targeting options we make available. Today, we\u2019re announcing a difficult decision that balances these important considerations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting January 19, 2022 we will remove\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/182371508761821?id=176276233019487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Detailed Targeting<\/a>\u00a0options that relate to topics people may perceive as sensitive, such as options referencing causes, organizations, or public figures that relate to health, race or ethnicity, political affiliation, religion, or sexual orientation. Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Health causes (e.g., \u201cLung cancer awareness\u201d, \u201cWorld Diabetes Day\u201d, \u201cChemotherapy\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Sexual orientation (e.g., \u201csame-sex marriage\u201d and \u201cLGBT culture\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Religious practices and groups (e.g., \u201cCatholic Church\u201d and \u201cJewish holidays\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Political beliefs, social issues, causes, organizations, and figures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to note that the interest targeting options we are removing are not based on people\u2019s physical characteristics or personal attributes, but instead on things like people\u2019s interactions with content on our platform. However, we\u2019ve heard concerns from experts that targeting options like these could be used in ways that lead to negative experiences for people in underrepresented groups. We\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/news\/update-to-facebook-ads-targeting-categories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">routinely review, update and remove targeting options<\/a>\u00a0to simplify our ads system, provide more value for advertisers and people, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/news\/keeping-advertising-safe-and-civil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reduce the potential for abuse.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision to remove these<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/pbEPTF-xE1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Detailed Targeting options<\/a> <\/strong>was not easy and we know this change may negatively impact some businesses and organizations. Some of our advertising partners have expressed concerns about these targeting options going away because of their ability to help generate positive societal change, while others understand the decision to remove them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many of our decisions, this was not a simple choice and required a balance of competing interests where there was advocacy in both directions. We feel confident that we can evolve our ads system to meet the needs of everyone we serve, while working diligently to continue supporting one of the best things about our platforms \u2014 helping people connect with and discover the businesses and organizations they care about.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Continuing to Reach your Audience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We remain committed to helping small businesses, non-profits, and advocacy groups reach their audiences. In addition to broad\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/308474373366888?id=176276233019487&amp;helpref=search&amp;sr=1&amp;query=broad%20targeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">targeting<\/a>\u00a0such as gender and age, below are some of our top tips and example use cases for our partners:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An advocacy group looking to drive donations or a small business trying to connect with its customers can use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/1090330204367211?id=2469097953376494&amp;helpref=search&amp;sr=1&amp;query=ENGAGEMENT%20CUSTOM%20AUDIENCES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Engagement Custom Audiences<\/a>\u00a0to reach people who have liked their Page or people who have watched their videos that may have appeared in News Feed (Video View Engagement Custom Audiences). These people have already shown direct interest in and engaged with the advertiser\u2019s cause or brand and may be interested in supporting when an advertiser reaches back out.<\/li>\n<li>Businesses and groups can also use these Engagement Custom Audiences as a seed audience to build\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/164749007013531?id=401668390442328&amp;helpref=search&amp;sr=4&amp;query=lookalike%20audiences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lookalike Audiences<\/a>\u00a0to help them further widen the people they can reach.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/610516375684216?id=2469097953376494&amp;helpref=search&amp;sr=3&amp;query=website%20custom%20audience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Website Custom Audiences<\/a>\u00a0and lookalikes based on these audiences can help reach people who have already engaged with a business or group\u2019s website or products.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/365561350785642?id=176276233019487&amp;helpref=search&amp;sr=4&amp;query=location%20targeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Location Targeting<\/a>\u00a0can be used to reach people in the vicinity of a business\u2019s brick and mortar store or within the radius of their shipping capabilities if they are online based.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, businesses and groups who have permission from their customers are able to use their customer data for targeting via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/business\/help\/170456843145568?id=2469097953376494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">customer lists from a custom audience<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Additional Ad Controls<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Even after we update our targeting options, people may still see ad content they aren\u2019t interested in, which is why we are also working to expand the control that allows people to choose to see fewer ads about certain types of content.<\/p>\n<p>Today, people can opt to see fewer ads related to politics, parenting, alcohol, and pets. Early next year, we will be giving people control of more types of ad content, including gambling and weight loss, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Just as we have for the past several years, we will continue to evaluate and evolve our ad system.
