plan meets with renewed opposition.<\/p>\n<p>The beleaguered Japanese giant today <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toshiba.co.jp\/about\/ir\/en\/news\/20220301_3.pdf?_ga=2.124040968.303148094.1646117034-1262667404.1645568916\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> [PDF] the departure of CEO Satoshi Tsunakawa, and the appointment of current corporate senior vice president Taro Shimada as his replacement.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation was offered for Tsunakawa\u2019s departure, but it\u2019s not hard to guess the reasons: on his watch Toshiba devised a plan to split the company into <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/11\/15\/toshiba_split\/\" rel=\"noopener\">three entities<\/a> to realise more value for shareholders and help to put a string of scandals in the past.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n        <noscript><br \/>\n            <a In recent weeks the company has had to fend off opinions from private equity firms who feel Toshiba needs a cleansing period in private ownership, as the restructuring needed will be more easily accomplished without the inconvenience of shareholder intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Toshiba today also announced that one element of its new governance plan won\u2019t be put to a vote at its forthcoming extraordinary general meeting, after one investor opposed it.<\/p>\n<p>Governance matters at Toshiba because some of its recent troubles \u2013 such as an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2015\/07\/21\/toshiba_ceo_resigns\/\" rel=\"noopener\">accounting scandal<\/a>, and an a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/06\/21\/toshiba_effissimo_meti_scandal\/\" rel=\"noopener\">influence-peddling scandal<\/a> that saw attempts made to secure government help to limit investor influence over board appointments &#8211; were seen as products of lax internal regulations and review practices.<\/p>\n<p>Execs had set the scene for the March 24 EGM to both sign off on the second restructuring plan and the new governance regulations.
