If you reset Windows 10<\/a> or 11<\/a>, your data might not be completely deleted from the PC, which is certainly less than ideal if you\u2019re selling or giving the Windows computer to someone else. Generally, you don\u2019t want the recipient to access your data, but that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n

According to Microsoft\u2019s known issue page<\/a>, \u201cSynced OneDrive files might not be deleted when selecting the \u201cRemove everything\u201d option when the device is reset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaborating on the issue\u2019s specific page<\/a>, the company says, \u201cWhen attempting to reset a Windows device with apps which have folders with reparse data, such as OneDrive or OneDrive for Business, files which have been downloaded or synced locally from OneDrive might not be deleted when selecting the \u201cRemove everything\u201d option.\u201d<\/p>\n

Basically, if you had files in OneDrive<\/a> downloaded locally, they may not get deleted when you reset the PC, regardless of which reset option you choose.<\/p>\n

Files only stored in the cloud won\u2019t persist, according to Microsoft. \u201cOneDrive files which are \u2018cloud only\u2019 or have not been downloaded or opened on the device are not affected and will not persist, as the files are not downloaded or synced locally,\u201d says the company.<\/p>\n

To prevent this issue from leaving files on your PC, you can\u00a0sign out or unlink OneDrive before resetting your Windows device<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Impacted versions are Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2. All currently-supported Windows versions could have this problem until Microsoft has a fix.<\/p>\n

As far as the fix goes, Microsoft says, \u201cWe are working on a resolution for an upcoming release and will provide more information when it is available.\u201d<\/p>\n
