A simple thing you can do to improve your online privacy and security is to use a custom DNS server. Like changing the DNS server on other platforms<\/a>, this is possible to do on your Android device. We\u2019ll show you how it works.<\/p>\n

DNS stands for \u201cDomain Name System,\u201d<\/a> and it connects web servers to their respective domain names. Your internet provider provides its own DNS server, but you can change which one your devices use. There are plenty of advantages to using a custom DNS server<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> Changing the DNS server on your Android phone is slightly different than on other devices. You can\u2019t just enter the string of numbers\u2014Cloudflare is 1.1.1.1, for example. Instead, you\u2019ll need the full TLS hostname. For Cloudflare, that\u2019s\u00a01dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com. You can find this for whichever DNS server you\u2019d like to use.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

First, swipe down once or twice (depending on your phone) from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon to open the Settings.<\/p>\n

Next, select \u201cNetwork & Internet\u201d or \u201cConnections.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scroll down and select \u201cPrivate DNS.\u201d On Samsung phones, you will need to go to \u201cMore Connection Settings\u201d before you can see Private DNS.<\/p>\n

Switch to \u201cPrivate DNS Provider Hostname\u201d and enter the hostname. Tap \u201cSave\u201d when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n

There you have it! You\u2019re now browsing the web with a little extra security on your Android device, and that\u2019s never a bad thing. If you\u2019re not sure which DNS to use, OpenDNS, Google DNS<\/a>, and Cloudflare DNS are popular choices.<\/p>\n
