Have you ever thought about why it\u2019s called \u201cMac\u201d or \u201cMacintosh\u201d in particular? We\u2019ll dig into the history behind the name.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">It\u2019s Named For a Type of Apple<\/h2>\n<p>Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ron Wayne founded \u201cApple Computer Company\u201d on April 1, 1976.\u00a0 Jobs named the small firm after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/science\/steve-jobs-chose-herbal-medicine-delayed-cancer-surgery-1.1124855\">visiting<\/a> an apple farm while on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fruitarianism\">fruitarian<\/a> diet. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2011\/12\/apples-original-brand-strategy-get-ahead-atari-phonebook\/333742\/\">wanted<\/a> Apple to alphabetically appear before Atari in the phone book.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, an Apple employee named Jef Raskin began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folklore.org\/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&amp;story=The_Father_of_The_Macintosh.txt\">working<\/a> on an experimental appliance-like computer project within Apple. In a 2003 <a href=\"https:\/\/ubiquity.acm.org\/article.cfm?id=941396\">interview<\/a> with ACM\u2019s Ubiquity journal, Raskin described the origins of what he named the project: \u201cI called it \u2018Macintosh\u2019 because the McIntosh is my favorite kind of apple to eat. In turn, the McIntosh apple got its name from a Canadian farmer named <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_McIntosh_(farmer)\">John McIntosh<\/a> who discovered an apple seedling on his farm in 1811, cultivated it, and liked the way its fruit tasted. (In Gaelic, the ancestral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houseofnames.com\/mcintosh-family-crest\">McIntosh surname<\/a> means \u201cson of the chief.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Early on, Jef Raskin had decided to add an \u201ca\u201d to the \u201cMac\u201d in \u201cMacintosh\u201d to try to avoid potential trademark conflicts with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcintoshaudio.com\/\">high-end<\/a> hi-fi audio company called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McIntosh_Laboratory\">McIntosh Laboratory<\/a>, based in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Jobs took over the Macintosh project in January 1981. For a short time afterward, Jobs wanted to call the upcoming computer \u201cBicycle,\u201d after a reference to one of his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.learningbyshipping.com\/bicycle-121262546097\">favorite sayings<\/a>, \u201cA computer is a bicycle for the mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-732634 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/1984_mac_photo_by_apple.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A photo of the original 1984 Macintosh.\" width=\"650\" height=\"403\" data-credittext=\"Apple\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" loading=\"lazy\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Macintosh developers, still attached to the Macintosh code name, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folklore.org\/StoryView.py?story=Bicycle.txt\">never liked<\/a> \u201cBicycle,\u201d and \u201cMacintosh\u201d won out. To clear up legal issues, Steve Jobs wrote McIntosh Laboratory a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/454244\/steve-jobs-naming-macintosh\/\">letter<\/a> in 1982 asking to use the name. After some negotiations, Apple licensed the rights to the name from McIntosh Laboratory in 1983, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.co.uk\/news\/30-years-mac-how-macintosh-got-its-name-24578\/\">bought<\/a> the trademark outright in 1986.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">From \u201cMacintosh\u201d to \u201cMac\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Since the beginning of the Apple Macintosh brand in 1984, Apple employees, press, and customers alike have been abbreviating the name to \u201cMac\u201d for convenience. It\u2019s much easier to say, and the nickname stuck: Upon the launch of the original Macintosh in 1984, Apple released applications called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacPaint\">MacPaint<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacWrite\">MacWrite<\/a>, for example, that quickly became must-haves for the new platform.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Mac\u2019s operating system was only designed for one computer\u2014the Macintosh\u2014Apple initially called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/732546\/macintosh-system-1-what-was-apples-mac-os-1.0-like\/\">very early versions<\/a> of Mac OS under generic names like \u201cSystem 1,\u201d later formalized to \u201cMacintosh System Software\u201d or just \u201cSystem Software.\u201d In 1997, Apple changed the OS\u2019s name to \u201cMac OS\u201d with the release of Mac OS 7.6, in an attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/CompTIA_IT_Fundamentals_Study_Guide\/SV_WCgAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=%22Mac+OS+7.6%22+review&amp;pg=PA134&amp;printsec=frontcover\">make it easier<\/a> to license the OS to Mac hardware <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macintosh_clone\">clone makers<\/a> at the time. Eventually, it made its way to other products like the \u201cPower Mac G4\u201d and the \u201cMacBook Pro.\u201d These days, Apple just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/mac\/\">calls its platform<\/a> \u201cMac,\u201d and you don\u2019t see much mention of \u201cMacintosh\u201d anywhere in Apple\u2019s marketing literature these days.
