It was apparent from John\u2019s response that \u201cbrand mentions\u201d is probably not a real thing in Google\u2019s algorithm, but he also said that there may be value to site visitors who encounter them.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Brand Mentions<\/h2>\n<p>There is a longstanding idea in the SEO community that Google uses mentions of a website as a form of link.<\/p>\n<p>One version of the idea is that if someone publishes a URL like this,<em>\u00a0https:\/\/www.example.com<\/em> but without making it a link, that Google probably counts it as a link. This is the unlinked URL idea, that a published URL can be used as a link by Google.<\/p>\n<p>The unlinked URL idea subsequently evolved into the idea that if a website mentions another site\u2019s brand name,\u00a0 that Google will also count that as a link. This is the \u201cbrand mentions\u201d idea.<\/p>\n<p>But there was never any evidence of that until around 2012 when Google published a patent called <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ranking-search-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ranking Search Results<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The patent was several pages long and buried deep in the middle of it was the mention of an \u201cimplied link\u201d being used as a type of link, which was different from an \u201cexpress link\u201d which is described as a traditional hyperlink.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201cimplied links\u201d only occurs a couple times in this one paragraph.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Google\u2019s John Mueller Discussing Unlinked Brand Mentions<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-439809 aligncenter b-lazy pcimg\" alt=\"Google's John Mueller discussing unlinked brand mentions\" width=\"480\" height=\"540\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/john-mueller-google-brand-mentions-621b4074dd145-sej-480x540.jpg 480w, https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/john-mueller-google-brand-mentions-621b4074dd145-sej.jpg 500w\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/john-mueller-google-brand-mentions-621b4074dd145-sej-480x540.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/john-mueller-google-brand-mentions-621b4074dd145-sej-480x540.jpg\" alt=\"Google's John Mueller discussing unlinked brand mentions\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h3>Two Main Ranking Factors Discussed in the Patent<\/h3>\n<p>To understand what the authors meant by an <em>implied link<\/em> you have to scroll up the page back to a section labeled \u201cBackground\u201d where the authors explain what all the patent is about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These are the two most important factors discussed in the patent:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The authors explain they are using <em>independent<\/em> links to a website as\u00a0 part of the ranking process. They call the site being linked to a\u201dtarget resource.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The authors also say that they are ranking search results by using search queries that contain a reference to a website, what they again call a \u201ctarget resource.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The patent explains without ambiguity that this second type of link is a search query that uses a brand name, what the SEO industry calls <em>Branded Search Queries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Where the patent makes a reference to a \u201c<em>group of resources<\/em>,\u201d it is referring to a group of web pages.<\/p>\n<p>A resource is a web page or a website.<\/p>\n<p>A group of resources is a group of web pages or websites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One more time: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the patent mentions a \u201c<em>resource<\/em>\u201d it\u2019s talking about web pages or websites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The patent states:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cA query can be classified as referring to a particular resource if the query includes a term that is recognized by the system as referring to the particular resource.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a term that refers to a resource may be all of or a portion of a resource identifier, e.g., the URL, for the resource.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the term \u201cexample.com\u201d may be a term that is recognized as referring to the home page of that domain, e.g., the resource whose URL is \u201chttp:\/\/www.example.com\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, search queries including the term \u201cexample.com\u201d can be classified as referring to that home page.<\/p>\n<p>As another example, if the system has data indicating that the terms \u201cexample sf\u201d and \u201cesf\u201d are commonly used by users to refer to the resource whose URL is \u201chttp:\/\/www.sf.example.com,\u201d queries that contain the terms \u201cexample sf\u201d or \u201cesf\u201d, e.g., the queries \u201cexample sf news\u201d and \u201cesf restaurant reviews,\u201d can be counted as reference queries for the group that includes the resource whose URL is \u201chttp:\/\/www.sf.example.com.\u201d \u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The above explanation defines what the authors call \u201creference queries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A reference query is what the SEO community refers to as <em>branded search queries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A branded search query is a search someone performs on Google using a keyword plus the brand name, the domain of a website or even a URL, which is exactly what the patent defines as reference queries.<\/p>\n<p>What the algorithm described in the patent does with those \u201creference queries\u201d (branded search queries) is to use them like links.<\/p>\n<p>The algorithm generates what\u2019s called a \u201cmodification factor\u201d which modifies (re-ranks) the search results according to this additional data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The additional data is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>1. A re-count of inbound links using only \u201cindependent\u201d links (links not associated with the site being ranked.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>2. Reference queries (branded search queries) are used as a type of link.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is what the patent states:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe system generates a modification factor for the group of resources from the count of independent links and the count of reference queries\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What the patent is doing is it is filtering out some hyperlinks in order to only use independent links and also to use branded search queries as another type of link,\u00a0 what can be defined as an implied link.<\/p>\n<h2>How the Idea of Brand Mentions Was Born<\/h2>\n<p>Some in the SEO community took one paragraph out of context in order to build their \u201cbrand mentions\u201d idea.<\/p>\n<p>The paragraph begins by talking about using independent links for ranking search results, just as is described in the background section of the patent.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe system determines a count of independent links for the group (step 302).<\/p>\n<p>A link for a group of resources is an incoming link to a resource in the group, i.e., a link having a resource in the group as its target.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The above statement matches exactly what the entire patent talks about, independent links.<\/p>\n<p>The next section is the part about \u201cimplied links\u201d that has confused the search industry for the past ten years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two things to note in order to more easily understand what is written:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0A \u201csource resource\u201d is the source of a link, the page that is linking out.<\/li>\n<li>A \u201ctarget resource\u201d is what is being linked to (and ranked).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>This is what the patent says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLinks for the group can include express links, implied links, or both.<\/p>\n<p>An express link, e.g., a hyperlink, is a link that is included in a source resource that a user can follow to navigate to a target resource.<\/p>\n<p>An implied link is a reference to a target resource, e.g., a citation to the target resource, which is included in a source resource but is not an express link to the target resource.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, a resource in the group can be the target of an implied link without a user being able to navigate to the resource by following the implied link.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The key to what an \u201cimplied link\u201d is contained in the very first mention of the phrase, implied link.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here it is again, with my emphasis:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAn implied link is a <em>reference<\/em> to a target resource\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Clearly, the use of the words \u201c<em>reference<\/em>\u201d is the second part of what the patent talks about, <em>reference queries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The patent talks about reference queries (aka branded search queries) from the beginning to the end.<\/p>\n<p>In retrospect it was a mistake for some in the SEO industry to build an entire theory about brand mentions from a single paragraph that was removed from the context of the entire patent.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that \u201cimplied links\u201d are not about brand mentions.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s background information on how \u201cbrand mentions\u201d was popularized.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">John Mueller on Unlinked Brand Mentions and Google\u2019s Algorithm<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-439811 aligncenter b-lazy pcimg\" alt=\"John Mueller discussing unlinked brand mentions\" width=\"480\" height=\"540\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/google-unlinked-brand-mentions-621b414556d23-sej-480x540.jpg 480w, https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/google-unlinked-brand-mentions-621b414556d23-sej.jpg 500w\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/google-unlinked-brand-mentions-621b414556d23-sej-480x540.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/google-unlinked-brand-mentions-621b414556d23-sej-480x540.jpg\" alt=\"John Mueller discussing unlinked brand mentions\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h2>Question About Unlinked Brand Mentions<\/h2>\n<p>The question about brand mentions had a lot of background information to unpack. So thanks for sticking around for that because knowing it is helpful to understanding the question and John Mueller\u2019s answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the question that was asked:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn some articles I see people are speaking about unlinked brand mention.<\/p>\n<p>I want to know your opinion in this case.<\/p>\n<p>Do you think it\u2019s also important for algorithm, unlinked brand mention?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Are Brand Mentions Important to Google\u2019s Algorithm?<\/h2>\n<p>The concept of \u201c<em>brand mentions<\/em>\u201d appeared to be\u00a0 unclear to John Mueller.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So Mueller, asked a follow up question:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHow do you mean, \u201cbrand mentions?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The person asking the question elaborated on what he meant:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like another website and article speaking about my website brand, but it doesn\u2019t link to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>John Mueller answered:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>I think that\u2019s kind of tricky because we don\u2019t really know what the context is there.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a bad thing, just for users.<\/p>\n<p>Because if they can find your website through that mention, then that\u2019s always a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>But I wouldn\u2019t assume that there\u2019s like some\u2026 I don\u2019t know\u2026 SEO factor that is trying to figure out where someone is mentioning your website name.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Brand Mentions Are Not an SEO Factor<\/h2>\n<p>John Mueller confirmed that brand mentions are not a search engine optimization factor.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the foundation of the \u201cbrand mentions\u201d idea is built on one paragraph of a patent that\u2019s taken out of context, I would hope the SEO community will set the idea that \u201cbrand mentions\u201d are an SEO factor.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller did say that brand mentions can be useful for helping users become aware of a website. And I agree that\u2019s a good way to think about brand mentions as a way to get the word out about a website.<\/p>\n<p><em>But brand mentions are not an SEO factor.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Just Because it\u2019s in a Patent Doesn\u2019t Mean it\u2019s in Use<\/h2>\n<p>One last note about the patent that mentions \u201creference queries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand that something isn\u2019t necessarily in use by Google just because it appears in a patent or a research paper.<\/p>\n<p>Google could be using it or maybe not.
