Astronomers at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have observed a supermassive black hole that is closely orbiting companion. Called a binary, these two black holes circle one another about every two years and the pair are set to eventually merge in approximately 10,000-years. This may seem like an eternity to us, but it typically takes a total of about 100 million years for black holes of this size to begin orbiting one another and finally come together. PKS 2131-021, located 9-billion-light-years from Earth, is one of 1,800 blazars that a group of researchers at Caltech in Pasadena has been monitoring. What caught their eye is its strange behavior where its brightness shows regular ups and downs as predictably as the ticking of a clock. This regular variation has now been determined to be the result of a second black hole pulling on the first as they orbit each other about every two years<\/p>\n
