Some of that malware was stored at Chinese cloud storage service <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wenshushu.cn\/\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Uncle Wen&#8221;<\/a> \u2013 a resource chosen as it is aimed at consumers, not state-sponsored criminal masterminds.<\/p>\n<p>Payloads were masked to evade anti-virus software. Attackers also established remote control of target systems.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YhXSGZ7@gGH6Xm-Bu2hJEAAAAAI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YhXSGZ7@gGH6Xm-Bu2hJEAAAAAI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>CyCraft&#8217;s post suggests defenses that, if deployed, should alert organisations to future use of this attack by APT10 or other actors.<\/p>\n<p>APT10 has been on the radar of security analysts since 2016 and has previously been named as the actor behind <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/11\/19\/apt_10_china_japan_attack\/\" rel=\"noopener\">attacks on Japanese automotive companies<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2017\/04\/04\/chinese_hackers_target_msps\/\" rel=\"noopener\">British managed services providers<\/a>, US-based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/12\/20\/two_alleged_chinese_hackers\/\" rel=\"noopener\">aerospace and defense firms<\/a> and missile defense systems in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/12\/20\/two_alleged_chinese_hackers\/\" rel=\"noopener\">South Korea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The gang is thought to have direct links to Chinese Ministry of State Security, the Middle Kingdom&#8217;s signals intelligence agency.<\/p>\n<p>China asserts that Taiwan is not an independent nation but a rogue province that must be brought back under Beijing&#8217;s control. In that context APT10&#8217;s actions can be considered part of efforts to disrupt institutions that China believes defy its government, and to sow discord in Taiwan in the hope it moves local sentiment to accept reunification.<\/p>\n<p>Most nations stop a hair&#8217;s width short of recognizing Taiwan&#8217;s statehood, so as not to contradict China&#8217;s position.
