In this post, I\u2019m going to show you how to save money in Google Ads by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Spending only on the right users<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Standing out from competitors<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Improving your landing pages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span>Only spend on the right users<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The first area we need to focus on is making sure we\u2019re not reaching beyond our means. That is, that we\u2019re spending our budget only on audiences with the highest likelihood to convert. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>1. Use location targeting<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>When you create a new campaign in Google Ads, the location targeting nearly always defaults to the country you\u2019re in, but every once in a while, it will actually default to \u201cAll locations,\u201d meaning\u2014you guessed it\u2014everywhere in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-location-targeting.png\" alt=\"how to save money in google ads - location targeting\" width=\"720\" height=\"443\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57567\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-location-targeting.png 720w, https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-location-targeting-480x295.png 480w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 720px, 100vw\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span>It makes zero sense to advertise to people who you cannot service or would be unprofitable for you. Google Ads offers highly customizable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/07\/07\/google-ads-geotargeting\">location targeting<\/a> options you can use to include the best locations for you and exclude those that will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2018\/02\/20\/stop-burning-your-adwords-budget\">waste of budget<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Although many folks love the idea of zip codes, they can be hard for the ad platforms to actually determine. If possible, try to use city or neighborhood targeting in lieu of zip code targeting to have a little better reach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Additionally, make sure you have your advanced targeting settings selected to only \u201cThose in my area\u201d as opposed to \u201cInterested in my area\u201d. Bid on high(er) intent keywords<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Many times I log into new accounts where people aren\u2019t seeing the results they want and the keywords are alarmingly broad. (And by broad, I don\u2019t mean the match type. We\u2019ll get to that in a minute.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s take an example: shoes. If your business is trying to sell shoes to people, godspeed. <\/span><span>But in all seriousness, the shoe space is very crowded, so ensuring you\u2019re advertising for exactly the right things is critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s say you\u2019re a specialty shoe store and you\u2019ve chosen to only sell women\u2019s golf shoes (interesting choice, but ok). We\u2019re in it for sales. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you have a limited budget, focus only on those things you actually sell and stay away from the higher volume keywords that will drive up your spend and likely yield less qualified traffic. Use only phrase and exact match keywords<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/keyword-match-types\">Keyword match types<\/a> have been getting less and less specific over the last half-decade, but that doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t work to keep the user queries you match to as specific as possible. This will help you limit your coverage on lower-quality searches by unqualified users that broad match can rustle up and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2018\/02\/20\/stop-burning-your-adwords-budget\"> burn your budget<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/google-adwords?cid=Web_blog_InContentTextLink\"><strong><em>Are you wasting money in Google Ads? Find out with the Free Google Ads Performance Grader.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span>Stand out from the competition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>When you\u2019re trying to be frugal in Google Ads, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2017\/09\/05\/how-to-compete-with-big-budgets-adwords\">specifically when you\u2019re competing against big brands<\/a>, it\u2019s important to make sure you stand out from the competition. There are a few simple ways to do this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>4. Use all the ad extensions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>If I conduct a quick search for \u201csmall business CRM,\u201d nearly all the ads look the same if you look at just the text. But the one that stands out and gets your attention? There\u2019s this little block of color where all other ads are really just text. While this doesn\u2019t mean that those companies aren\u2019t using image extensions, it does mean that, for whatever reason, on this search monday.com has the attention advantage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For this reason, I encourage you to always use<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2011\/09\/15\/adwords-ad-extensions-guide\"> every iteration of ad extensions<\/a> that you\u2019re eligible to use.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sitelink<\/li>\n<li>Callout<\/li>\n<li>Structured snippet<\/li>\n<li>Image (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/07\/21\/google-ads-image-extensions\">how to set up image extensions here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Call<\/li>\n<li>Lead form<\/li>\n<li>Location<\/li>\n<li>Affiliate<\/li>\n<li>Price<\/li>\n<li>App<\/li>\n<li>Promotion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>When you\u2019re in the Google Ads interface, click on <strong>Ads<\/strong> on the left navigation, then <strong>Ad Extensions<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-ad-extension-navigation.png\" alt=\"how to save money in google ads - extensions tab in google ads dashboard\" width=\"434\" height=\"508\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-57564\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span>Once you\u2019re on that page, click the blue plus button to add any of the extension types listed. By having as many extensions as possible, you\u2019re giving yourself the best chance to capture the user\u2019s attention on the SERP and stand out from the competition. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>5. Use Auction Insights for your messaging<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Not every search is going yield ads with lots of extensions included. In that scenario, you\u2019re left to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2019\/04\/22\/google-ad-copy-mistakes\">Google ad copy<\/a> and messaging to help you stand out from the competition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first step is to identify who your competition is. If you already have campaigns running, you can use the Auction Insights report to identify the other companies that are showing up next to your ads. It lists the companies that are showing up next to your ads, then gives you a number of stats to help you understand how you stack up to their coverage. If you do this regularly and don\u2019t click on your ads, or any others, you\u2019re going to indicate to Google you\u2019re not actually in the market for your offerings. Meaning that over time, you won\u2019t see ads for yourself or others. So IF you do conduct searches to get insights, I suggest you do them very minimally and try to use different devices for each subsequent search to prevent Google from inferring patterns from your behavior. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Once you have a good handle on what other competitors are doing, whether through tools or through SERP spying, make sure your ads stand out. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>If every ad uses the keyword (or something close to it) in Headline 1, then you\u2019re likely best served to not do that. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2022\/02\/01\/headline-examples\">Google Ads headline examples here!<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>If all businesses are offering a discount, it may make sense for you to speak to your higher level of quality, explaining why you don\u2019t have a discount. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>If your competitor\u2019s listed price is higher than yours, list your price and taut how you\u2019re \u201ccheaper than the other guy.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-competitive-ad-copy.png\" alt=\"how to save money in google ads- competitive ad copy\" width=\"720\" height=\"737\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57578\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-competitive-ad-copy.png 720w, https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/save-money-google-ads-competitive-ad-copy-480x491.png 480w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 720px, 100vw\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span>The key on the SERPs is to stand out. So based on what you find, make sure that you\u2019re able to craft a new message and be the brand that stands out. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Take special care with your landing pages<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>You\u2019ve spent your time and hard-earned money developing Google Ads campaigns to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2014\/08\/14\/increase-traffic-to-my-website\">bring users to your site,<\/a> but take a good, honest look at your landing pages.<\/span><span>\u00a0Would you convert on them? Be honest. If you\u2019re lying to me, it\u2019s not hurting me. It\u2019s only hurting you!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>6. Have quality landing pages<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Higher quality landing pages mean higher Quality Scores, which means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/08\/17\/lower-cost-per-click\">lower cost per click.<\/a> And while landing pages used to be a big pain in the butt, they no longer have to be. Platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/unbounce.grsm.io\/paidmediapros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unbounce<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/instapage.grsm.io\/paidmediapros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instapage<\/a> make creating landing pages easy for anyone, including people who aren\u2019t coders or developers (i.e., the author of this post). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are a few specifics to keep in mind for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2016\/06\/10\/high-converting-landing-pages\">high converting landing pages<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Always have a clear call to action that is being tracked through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/05\/24\/google-ads-conversion-tracking\">conversion tracking<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Be sure the content on the page puts your product or service in a good light and convinces the user to work with you. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Ensure the page loads quickly on both a desktop and a mobile device.
