One social media platform, TikTok<\/a>, has updated its guidelines because of the harmful effects some videos are having on teens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not reality. Once [teens] see that, you know, someone is having a good time doing this or doing that, it impacts how they feel,\u201d said social worker Jay Ratia. \u201cThey can say wow. Everyone else is doing great.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Social media can be a highlight reel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The effect it has on teens, especially during the pandemic, has been huge.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Ratia told CBS 17, he was thrilled when he learned the social media platform TikTok<\/a> updated community guidelines for acceptable videos.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone had to do it for the safety of children, because of COVID. COVID has changed the landscape completely. They\u2019re using more social media now,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all repetitive. Once you see [a video], you keep seeing it and you see it again and again,\u201d Ratia said. \u201c[Kids then will say] oh that\u2019s my idol image. That\u2019s what I should do. I should over-exercise. I should eat like that person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While some people are concerned that TikTok officials have taken the guidelines too far, Ratia disagrees.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s censoring,\u201d he said. \u201cNegative content is negative content. If it\u2019s harming someone or it\u2019s promoting a negative action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Atria hopes the strides TikTok has made, have a lasting impact.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, these other platforms will start re-doing their policies and updating them to make it safe,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Atria told CBS 17 that parents can also help their teens, by making sure there\u2019s an open dialogue between them.<\/span><\/p>\n

He encourages parents to talk with their children about what they see online, what they post, and what their friends post.<\/span><\/p>\n

TikTok To Crack Down On Harmful Activities<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Earlier this month, TikTok officials announced they were going to crack down and remove videos that showed \u201charmful activities by minors\u201d and even videos that could promote disordered eating.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the first move of its kind for social media, Ratia said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike the suicide hoax and those challenges,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said it\u2019s a good first step to help the mental health of teens.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
