The first article from our collaboration focuses on the collision between marketing and the metaverse; written by <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/benjamin-lucas-66791476\/?originalSubdomain=uk\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Dr Benjamin Lucas<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>, MD at 3DI, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/martin-wetzels-4a49253\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Martin Wetzels<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>, Professor of Marketing, EDHEC Business School, France and our CEO, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/team\/julio-taylor\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Julio Taylor<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>, it unites the academic sphere with real-world experience.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In recent years, blockchain technology has emerged as the backbone of decentralised finance (DeFi) via cryptocurrency and triggered a shift in the<a href=\"https:\/\/info.kpmg.us\/news-perspectives\/advancing-the-profession\/blockchain-technology-transparency-and-traceability-as-cornerstone.html\"><span class=\"s2\"> future of the contract<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most recently, interest has begun to boom in another blockchain-based technology: the non-fungible token, or NFT. Simultaneously, the emergence of a proposed virtual universe \u2013 the metaverse \u2013 points towards the advertising, selling and service provision of the future. But how will NFTs and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/opinion\/2022\/01\/18\/the-metaverse-going-backward\"><span class=\"s2\">metaverse<\/span><\/a> impact the marketing world, if at all?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What is an NFT?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In very simple terms, NFTs are digital contractual deeds and certificates of ownership. When an NFT, commonly (but not necessarily) a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2111.08893\"><span class=\"s2\">digital asset<\/span><\/a>, is exchanged, the transaction and transfer of ownership is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avidan\/2021\/09\/13\/nfts-reshape-brand-marketing-in-the-creator-economy\/?sh=1b088f55da2d\"><span class=\"s2\"> cryptographically<\/span><\/a> recorded, and thus made verifiable, via a<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2111.08893\"><span class=\"s2\"> blockchain record<\/span><\/a>. This allows unique assets to be acquired and traded by unique owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The attention and interest boom surrounding NFTs has arguably been driven in particular by reports of often massive prices and earnings achievable by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/digital-catalogues\/natively-digital-a-curated-nft-sale\"><span class=\"s2\">digital art and content creators<\/span><\/a> who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/cryptocurrency\/how-to-mint-nfts-astep-by-step-guide-12058112.htm\"><span class=\"s2\"> mint<\/span><\/a> and sell (often via cryptocurrency) one-off pieces, which are subsequently auctioned or sold, purchased, held and traded much like a physical art asset via marketplaces such as<a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> Open Sea<\/span><\/a>. Another factor driving this interest, however, is the potential of further convergence of NFT with the metaverse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What is the metaverse?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The metaverse concept has emerged in its current definition<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/explainer-what-is-metaverse-and-web-30-060003351.html\"><span class=\"s2\"> as a future, immersive online world<\/span><\/a> \u2013 or rather, universe \u2013 where real human beings and collective entities can carry out virtual lives. Technologies including social media, ubiquitous remote communication, gaming, virtual world gaming, esports and MMO games, virtual reality, augmented reality and even online shopping have all helped to lay the foundation of what this parallel digital future might look like, but also offer clues as to which constituent technologies might form part of the metaverse in the future.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-65077 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-480x267.jpeg\" alt=\"Metaverse\" width=\"480\" height=\"267\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-480x267.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-1024x570.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-180x100.jpeg 180w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-768x427.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-280x156.jpeg 280w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-640x356.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280-1200x668.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/woman-6882918_1280.jpeg 1280w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\"\/><span class=\"s1\">Facebook\u2019s recent rebranding as \u201cMeta\u201d also clearly signals the tech giant\u2019s intentions to actively develop and operate within this reimagined web, representing a substantial step for the concept in becoming mainstream reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The metaverse concept is also occasionally described as overlapping with the emergent<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/explainer-what-is-metaverse-and-web-30-060003351.html\"><span class=\"s2\"> Web 3.0 paradigm: an internet reimagined around decentralisation<\/span><\/a>. This overlap is most apparent in the integration of NFT assets into virtual worlds, where everything from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/biancasalonga\/2021\/10\/28\/are-designer-nfts-and-digital-clothing-the-new-chic\/?sh=6f2640764a86\"><span class=\"s2\"> digital fashion<\/span><\/a> to<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/03\/24\/nft-art-digital-house-500000-dollars-mars-house-krista-kim\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> digital real estate<\/span><\/a> is possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other \u2018metaverses\u2019 such as<a href=\"https:\/\/decentraland.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> Decentraland<\/span><\/a> even already allow retailers to set up stores, with<span class=\"s2\"> Samsung<\/span> recently launching<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/explore\/metaverse-837x\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> Samsung 837X<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What do NFTs and the metaverse mean for marketing?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Brands have begun to employ NFTs in a variety of ways.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/news\/coca-cola-nft-auction-fetches-more-than-575000\"><span class=\"s2\"> Coca-Cola<\/span><\/a> has engaged in charitable auctions of NFT collectables, the<a href=\"https:\/\/nbatopshot.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> NBA and WNBA<\/span><\/a> offers a futuristic version of trading cards and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nike-metaverse-rtfkt-nikeland-roblox-nft\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> Nike has acquired RTFKT<\/span><\/a> to sell digital shoes (Ad Age offers a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/digital-marketing-ad-tech-news\/how-brands-are-using-nfts-continually-updated-list\/2376086\"><span class=\"s2\">continually updated list<\/span><\/a>\u201d of NFT applications in marketing). How exactly the prevalence of NFTs grows \u2013 especially when considering the form the NFT and metaverse marketing sphere will ultimately take remains to be seen \u2013 but a few sensible predictions and the noting of foreseeable opportunities is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">NFTs as a basis for selling digital goods inside the metaverse(s) will likely continue to grow in the future, especially as the ultimate form of the metaverse becomes clear, and if some group of consumers become \u2013 and remain \u2013 interested in managing sophisticated digital avatars of themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Somewhat back in the \u2018realverse\u2019 though, NFTs may find applications in advanced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2021\/10\/12\/why-marketers-need-understand-nfts-and-how-get-started\"><span class=\"s2\"> loyalty and membership programmes and CRM<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, NFT-based customer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2021\/05\/07\/how-the-world-of-nfts-could-be-the-next-big-thing-for-advertising\/?sh=d8904b544912\"><span class=\"s2\"> gift and voucher<\/span><\/a> promotions are an intriguing possibility, especially against a backdrop of advancements in marketing automation \u2013 especially precision<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avidan\/2021\/09\/13\/nfts-reshape-brand-marketing-in-the-creator-economy\/?sh=306fef87da2d\"><span class=\"s2\"> personalisation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">NFTs could also serve as a basis for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avidan\/2021\/09\/13\/nfts-reshape-brand-marketing-in-the-creator-economy\/?sh=306fef87da2d\"><span class=\"s2\"> repeat monetisation<\/span><\/a> of digital content (including promotional content) and merchandise, as well as a basis for<span class=\"s2\"> exclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avidan\/2021\/09\/13\/nfts-reshape-brand-marketing-in-the-creator-economy\/?sh=1b088f55da2d\">product launch access tokens<\/a><\/span> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/26\/mark-cuban-dallas-mavericks-may-use-nfts-for-ticketing.html\"><span class=\"s2\"> tickets<\/span><\/a>. Collectively, this points to potentially exciting and compelling disruption to advertising in coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Brands will also likely benefit from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/uk\/culture\/bazaar-art\/a38420650\/givenchy-graphic-artist-chito-nfts\/\"><span class=\"s2\"> collaboration with content creators<\/span><\/a>. But it should be noted that the democratisation of content creation and mass-distribution \u2013 which began in the social media sphere \u2013 may also play out in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avidan\/2021\/09\/13\/nfts-reshape-brand-marketing-in-the-creator-economy\/?sh=306fef87da2d\"><span class=\"s2\">creator-centric<\/span><\/a>\u201d world of NFT production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In terms of creating and launching new services, precursors to future metaverse service provision are already emerging, such as in entertainment, as fascinatingly illustrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2286778-what-is-a-metaverse-and-why-is-everyone-talking-about-it\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Ariana Grande\u2019s concerts inside the Fortnite video game<\/span><\/a>. The retailing of virtual goods also raises interesting questions about<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/109467059921008\"><span class=\"s2\"> tangibility<\/span><\/a>: what a service is and what service design and omnichannel delivery might look like in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Conclusions<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">An important and interesting consideration for marketers using NFTs is around the value of participation in a resell market for their NFTs and how to make pricing or starting bid price decisions. For example, the more NFT marketplaces can incorporate a resell or gains quota for the original creator no matter how many times an asset is sold, the more NFT creation becomes a potential revenue stream for existing brands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Irrespective, in some situations, an after market for NFTs may be extremely valuable to certain brands in terms of its potential positive effect on brand reputation and brand equity, by creating exclusive asset classes for exclusive customer segments, comparable with what has been achieved via the emergence of the resell market for high-end physical sneakers (which has, in turn, lead to opportunities for producers to develop and command higher prices for exclusive highly-collectable products).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In other cases, the potential volatility in terms of demand fluctuations, market longevity, growth and price stability in a certain NFT aftermarket \u2013 or even the risk of alienating certain customer segments \u2013 may present a significant downside risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In a nutshell, the potential for NFTs to define the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hallaminternet.com\/strategy\/\"><span class=\"s2\">marketing strategy<\/span><\/a> toolkit of the future will be the combination and recombination of existing marketing tactics; for example, consider NFTs as combined advertising + reward schemes + tickets + collectables. Here, the current selling model of blending a physical and digital presence could work, such as where NFTs include ownership of an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/news\/coca-cola-to-offer-first-ever-nft-collectibles\"><span class=\"s2\"> ancillary physical asset<\/span><\/a> or participation in ancillary events or services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Important and interesting considerations for marketers looking to invest in the metaverse as part of marketing strategy include the need to realise that the technology currently exists as a nascent family of technologies, but has the potential to turn into a major reimagining of what the internet can facilitate. The timeline for constituent technologies is \u2013 and will remain \u2013 difficult to predict, as will the coalescing of these technologies (and others not yet emerged) into the fulfilment of the true metaverse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Marketers should also actively participate in shaping this future through a prosocial marketing lens. If the depth and volume of a consumer\u2019s time spent online does continue to increase exponentially via new forms of immersive interaction with the world around them (and the world \u2018not around\u2019 them!), crucial considerations for policy makers, lawmakers and commercial entities \u2013 both platform owners and platform participants \u2013 will exist in areas such as digital ethics, digital privacy and user protection online.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Future Research<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Scientific research has begun to explore topics such as the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-00053-8\"><span class=\"s2\"> NFT market<\/span><\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2111.08893\"><span class=\"s2\"> NFT security<\/span><\/a>, but there is a vast opportunity for research to understand NFT-based and metaverse-based marketing as these technologies grow (building on existing research on the<span class=\"s2\"> marketing applications of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S209672092100018X\">blockchain<\/a><\/span> in general).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Specifically, academic research will facilitate the building of understanding and best-practice in deploying and fine-tuning new marketing techniques enabled by these technologies via existing knowledge and research frameworks within consumer psychology and behavioural science.
