The Cinnamon desktop uses a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/linuxmint\/muffin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fork<\/a> of Mutter called <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2015\/07\/01\/linux_mint_17_2_review\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Muffin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n                <\/noscript>\n            <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Clutter is indirectly the reason that lots of people found that GNOME 3 and Ubuntu&#8217;s Unity ran poorly under VirtualBox.<\/p>\n<p>By default, VMs use software OpenGL rendering, making anything that used Clutter sluggish unless you enabled 3D acceleration and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2013\/04\/26\/xbuntu_round_up\/?page=2\" rel=\"noopener\">installed the VirtualBox guest extensions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>GNOME 40 and Gtk 4 subsumed and replaced the functionality of the standalone <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/clutter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clutter<\/a> library.<\/p>\n<p>So as far as the GNOME project is concerned, it&#8217;s now surplus to requirements, and as of the next version, GNOME 42, it will be removed and the source code moved to the Gitlab <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/Archive\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a The latest version, Clutter 1.26, was back in 2016 and even the last point release, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/clutter\/-\/commit\/fd85623d34a54b3f5607011086cf19cb2c756a6a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1.26.4<\/a> was in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>However, a lot of other Gtk-based desktops haven&#8217;t moved to Gtk 4 yet, including MATE, Xfce, Pantheon and Pixel.
