said Elastic.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, Amazon Web Services <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.elastic.co\/news-events\/press-releases\/press-releases-details\/2022\/Elastic-and-Amazon-Reach-Agreement-on-Trademark-Infringement-Lawsuit\/default.aspx\">has begun<\/a> stripping the term &#8220;Elasticsearch&#8221; Further terms were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Elasticsearch is a database search engine, and a darling of the enterprise search world (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/db-engines.com\/en\/ranking\/search+engine\">DB-Engines has the platform ranked top<\/a> as of February 2022). It was initially released in 2010 and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2015\/10\/02\/aws_embraces_open_source_elastic_search\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon introduced a service called &#8220;Elasticsearch&#8221; in 2015<\/a>. Banon&#8217;s firm was not impressed \u2013\u00a0and considered that the use of the name created &#8220;confusion&#8221; in the market \u2013 and a bitter dispute ensued, including the 2019 lawsuit and a change of license for the Elastic&#8217;s Elasticsearch code. Specifically, Elastic moved to non-free licensing in order to limit those vendors who might seek to offer the code as a software-as-a-service offering. The move was not popular with many in the open-source community, with developer Drew DeVault<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/drewdevault.com\/2021\/01\/19\/Elasticsearch-does-not-belong-to-Elastic.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declaring at the time<\/a> that it was &#8220;a move against open source&#8230; [and] every single one of 1,573 contributors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Yg5EQTR3a3R02V-2lZW8fQAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Yg5EQTR3a3R02V-2lZW8fQAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>In January 2021, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/09\/10\/aws_elasticsearch_opensearch\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Banon said<\/a> that both the ElasticSearch and Kibana projects would drop the open-source Apache 2.0 license and adopt what it dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/elastic\/elasticsearch\/blob\/master\/licenses\/ELASTIC-LICENSE-2.0.txt\" rel=\"nofollow\">Elastic license<\/a> and the non-open-source Server Side Public License (<a href=\"https:\/\/opensource.org\/node\/1099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SSPL<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Amazon responded by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/04\/13\/aws_renames_elasticsearch_fork_opensearch\/\" rel=\"noopener\">forking the Elasticsearch and Kibana code<\/a> and renaming it &#8220;OpenSearch&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/07\/13\/opensearch_10\/\" rel=\"noopener\">version 1 milestone was reached in July 2021<\/a> and this week&#8217;s announcement looks like an end to hostilities.<\/p>\n<p>The productization of open-source code by some of the tech giants has long been an issue, occasionally resulting in license changes (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/10\/16\/mongodb_licensning_change\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MongoDB springs effortlessly to mind<\/a>). <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/01\/21\/aws_not_ok_says_elastic\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Elastic went down a similar path to MongoDB<\/a>, although being based on Apache Lucerne meant that it could be accused of benefiting from open source while locking down products itself.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there was always that Elasticsearch trademark, which was the subject of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.348946\/gov.uscourts.cand.348946.1.0_2.pdf\">2019 California suit<\/a> [PDF].<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Yg5EQTR3a3R02V-2lZW8fQAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Yg5EQTR3a3R02V-2lZW8fQAAAFY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p><i>The Register<\/i> asked Amazon for its thoughts on the matter, but the box-shifting cloud behemoth has yet to respond.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Elastic seemed happy to be friends again.
