Wordle<\/em>, the popular word-guessing puzzle game that was recently acquired by <\/a>The New York Times<\/a>, <\/em>has decoupled from the original version of the game.<\/p>\n

Following the acquisition, The New York Times <\/em>rolled out a new URL for Wordle<\/a> that differs from the original \u2018powerlanguage.co.uk\/wordle<\/a>\u2018 URL (which now redirects to the Times\u2019 <\/em>URL). As of Wordle #241, which was released today, February 15th, the solution for each Wordle<\/em> will be different on both versions of the game.<\/p>\n

Alert! ?Wordle discrepancy? I’ve still been playing at the powerlanguage site, because I didn’t know there was a new NYT URL, and today the solution was different (for the first time). If I go to the NYT site my history isn’t there ? I had a 37 game unbroken streak ?? halp!<\/p>\n

The initial changes to the solution list were first spotted by BoingBoing<\/em><\/a> on February 11th. The publisher said that The New York Times\u2019<\/em> version of the game has had some upcoming solutions, including \u2018agora,\u2019 \u2018lynch,\u2019 \u2018pupal,\u2019 \u2018slave\u2019 and \u2018wench,\u2019 removed.<\/p>\n

Further, words like \u2018darky,\u2019 \u2018spics,\u2019 \u2018gooks\u2019 and \u2018coons\u2019 were removed from the list of accepted guesses too.<\/p>\n

Wordle #241\u2019s solution on the regular version of the game is \u2018agora,\u2019 whereas the NYT\u00a0<\/em>version\u2019s solution is \u2018aroma.\u2019<\/p>\n

Australian journalist Michael Slezak on Twitter got in touch with the NYT over the discrepancy in the two versions and was told that they are \u201cupdating the word list over time to remove obscure words to keep the puzzle accessible to more people, as well as insensitive or offensive words.\u201d<\/p>\n

While not a monumental change, it has upset some users who can no longer compare with their friends\u2019 solutions.<\/p>\n

So #Wordle<\/a> has now split into two versions. I\u2019ve seen a different solution for the one hosted on @nytimes<\/a> and the one hosted on the original site.
