The agency successfully tested a helicopter equipped with an experimental autonomous flight software this past weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test flight, which fell under the agency\u2019s Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS), involved a UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter retrofitted with Sikorsky\u2019s MATRIX technology, a core component of the program. DARPA defines MATRIX as a \u201ctailorable, drop-in, removable kit\u201d that can be added to many pre-existing aircraft without the steep expense of building a new, individualized autonomous system from scratch. Sikorsky (a Lockheed Martin subsidiary) conducted the 30-minute flight over the US Army installation at Fort Campbell, Kentucky on Saturday, with an additional uninhabited flight on Monday for good measure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DARPA first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/news\/features\/2021\/sikorsky-and-darpa-fly-opv-black-hawk-with-supervised-autonomy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MATRIX in March 2021, though the technology was too new back then to be used without a pilot on board. The flight\u2014which consisted of autonomous take-off, landing and two simulated obstacle avoidance scenarios, all coordinated with a tablet\u2014was a success, with little help needed from the supervising pilot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sikorsky and DARPA Fly OPV Black Hawk With Supervised Autonomy\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0uLQcT8V3oE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DARPA is known for exploring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.extremetech.com\/extreme\/252946-darpa-developing-broadband-interface-brain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less conventional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technologies, often conducting experiments that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/15-darpa-innovations-2014-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sound like<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019ve been ripped from a 1980\u2019s sci-fi novel. But the point of ALIAS isn\u2019t to perform awe-inspiring, patriotism-inducing feats of science, despite what the agency\u2019s track record may convey. DARPA hopes ALIAS will help reduce crew workloads while maintaining or improving safety, especially in conditions that lack sufficient visibility or communications. Eventually, the program will be able to support the execution of an entire mission from takeoff to landing, as well as autonomously address aircraft system failures during flight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith ALIAS, the Army will have much more operational flexibility,\u201d said Stuart Young, program manager at DARPA\u2019s Tactical Technology Office, in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2022-02-08\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis includes the ability to operate aircraft at all times of the day or night, with and without pilots, and in a variety of difficult conditions, such as contested, congested, and degraded visual environments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the success of this test, DARPA now considers the retrofitted Black Hawk to be an \u201coptionally piloted vehicle,\u201d or OPV.
