One of the most common challenges I encounter with clients early on is that their site is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/seo-guide\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>not ranking well in search results<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These marketers, like you, may be doing some version of They Ask, You Answer and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/content-and-inbound-marketing\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>content marketing<\/span><\/a> already. Perhaps they\u2019re blogging regularly, or perhaps they have a brand new website with all the right features. They may even have numerous rounds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/how-to-do-keyword-research\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>keyword research<\/span><\/a> under their belts, but they\u2019re still not showing up on the first page of Google.<\/p>\n<p>If any of this sounds familiar, I can understand why you\u2019re frustrated, especially if you feel like you\u2019re putting in loads of effort with no payoff and no clear indication as to why it\u2019s not working.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There can be dozens of reasons why your website isn\u2019t ranking in Google, or search engines in general, but most of the time, there are just a handful of factors that are the culprits, as we\u2019ll dive into below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In this article we will discuss:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Why your organic ranking is so important.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">10 reasons why your website is not ranking in Google.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">How to combat these 10 factors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While this isn\u2019t an all-inclusive list, chances are that if your website isn\u2019t ranking, it\u2019s one or more of the following factors that may be holding you back.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"readMore--global-cta all--text--center\"><a class=\"h4 color--blue light no--underline\" title=\"Free Guide:\u00a0The Inbound Marketer\u2019s Guide to Search Engine Optimization\" href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/seo-guide\">Free Guide:\u00a0The Inbound Marketer\u2019s Guide to Search Engine Optimization<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Why your organic search engine rankings are so important<\/h2>\n<p>Organic search allows your content and business to get found by people who don\u2019t know you exist yet, but are looking for the solution or service you offer. In some cases, it\u2019s more than $30,000 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I said that right \u2014 not $30,000 annually, but each month.<\/p>\n<p>But guess how much they\u2019re paying for that exposure when they rank organically instead?<\/p>\n<p>Nada. Zilch.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re just paying for the salary for whoever is responsible for creating that content for their site, which would be much less than $30,000 per month!<\/p>\n<p>(And listen, there is a place for pay-per-click <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/services\/paid-search-social\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>PPC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span> as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/organic-search-vs-paid-search\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>comprehensive strategy<\/span><\/a>; that\u2019s why IMPACT has experts to help clients with it.)<\/p>\n<p>Now that we understand why ranking in Google is so important, you may be thinking, \u201cI want in! So why aren\u2019t I ranking too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s dive into some of the main factors at play that might explain why your content is not on the first page of Google already \u2014 and explain what you can do to get there.<\/p>\n<h2>Why your site isn\u2019t ranking well in Google search results<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Your site speed is too slow<\/h3>\n<p>On average, most web pages take about five or six seconds to load on mobile devices. Now, guess how long most users are going to stick around before they leave the page?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re looking at more like three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>That discrepancy means people aren\u2019t getting what they need fast enough.<\/p>\n<p>An important thing to note is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/slow-page-speed-hurts-user-experience-and-can-also-affect-search-rankings-interview\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Google looks at your engagement metrics<\/span><\/a>, such as people sticking around on your site versus \u201cbouncing\u201d right off, as a way to determine whether users find your site valuable. (Note: And just because the sales pitch bombardment is more common than ever doesn\u2019t make it effective.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal;\">As buyers, we want to be heard, understood, and informed so we can find the best solution for us.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to build trust in your content<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To build that trust, and to make sure your prospects feel heard, understood, and helped, we need to address their biggest questions, worries, and concerns on our website. This is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/what-is-they-ask-you-answer\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart of what the They Ask, You Answer philosophy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is all about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that said, take an honest look at your blog content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re blogging on a regular basis, but your site isn\u2019t ranking, take a look at what your content is about and how it\u2019s being framed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do all your blogs have an undertone about how your company is the best, why someone should buy from you, or why someone needs to talk to a sales member?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not enough to just be creating content and blogs for your site, but it needs to be helpful and trustworthy information. This means hitting on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/big-5-blog-article-topics\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Big 5 topics<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are guaranteed to drive traffic, leads, and sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not enough to just write about those topics; it\u2019s equally as important <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you do it: the goal should be to build trust and give the reader honest, unbiased information \u2013 not to convince them to buy from you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take an honest look<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at your site pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As counterintuitive as it may seem, your site shouldn\u2019t be all about you. Instead, it should focus on what problems your product\/service can fix for your prospects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/team\/stacy-willis\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stacy Willis, former Lead Website Strategist at IMPACT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, challenges businesses to see how many times site pages mention <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we, us,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> versus some version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your site is all <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company-focused<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite how optimized it is for search engines, it\u2019s not building trust between your brand and the user, and it may have a hard time ranking as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to build trust on your site is by leveraging the power of video. Content needs to be clear enough so people can understand quickly what it is that you\u2019re offering, not just site pages filled with industry jargon that people may not be searching for. You can do this by doing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/how-to-do-keyword-research\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keyword research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t just apply to blog articles, but to any page of your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s plenty that goes into optimizing for SEO (which we\u2019ll discuss further), but at the basics, you need the content on your site to clearly relay what your service\/product\/company is solving for and how people are searching for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to fix this<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get started with making sure you\u2019re targeting the right keywords, start with some keyword research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read our guide to understand how keyword research works and how you can start to implement it: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/how-to-do-keyword-research\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Do Keyword Research: The Ultimate Guide for Digital Marketers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a side note, it may be interesting to see what keywords your site is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranking for (you can do this with organic research domain reports from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/sem\/?utm_source=berush&amp;utm_medium=promo&amp;utm_campaign=link\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keyword tracking tool like Semrush<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All keywords are not created equal (ex. an IT company ranking in the first position in Google for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charity Challenge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t do much to drive qualified leads and prospects).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shows why it\u2019s important to identify the keywords you\u2019ll want to target through your content strategy that will actually drive results for your business. And it\u2019s not enough to just know how you refer to your business. Put yourself in the shoes of your prospects for how <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they\u2019re <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking about your product or service. Then create a content strategy that works those keywords into them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. You\u2019re not publishing regularly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you saw above, it\u2019s not enough to just be publishing blogs every week if it\u2019s not the right quality. However, even optimized content needs to be published at a regular cadence to really see search rankings pick up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are numerous reasons that as content trainers at IMPACT, we recommend publishing at least 2 to 3 pieces of new content per week. For one, it keeps you in front of your prospects and keeps you top of mind for those already familiar with you. It lets them know that you\u2019re still relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever visit a site that looks like it hasn\u2019t been updated in years? A fresh stream of blog content helps your prospects know you\u2019re still in the game, and the content on your site is still relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, and more importantly to this discussion, it increases your opportunities and likelihood of ranking well in Google. The more content you have on your site, the more opportunities that Google has to index your content for different keywords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building off of that, if Google starts to notice you\u2019re publishing content on a regular basis, it\u2019ll readjust its crawl timelines on your site and visit more frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s almost like taking a trip to the post office to check for any mail in your PO Box (do some people still have these and know what I\u2019m talking about?). If you\u2019re used to not getting mail delivered there for an extended period of time, you\u2019re probably going to be less incentivized to check it every single day. In the same way, if you\u2019re getting new mail every day, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll remember to stop by on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of blogging, sites that haven\u2019t regularly been publishing content may have gotten Google accustomed to only crawling their site on an infrequent basis, maybe every couple weeks or so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is almost like being the person who is picked last for kickball in the schoolyard, or the person who is passed up for a promotion at work. When it comes to keyword rankings, you might be the last site on Google\u2019s \u201cmind\u201d for a keyword ranking promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, making regular publishing a habit gets Google to come crawling around more often \u2013 within minutes or hours for some of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/real-results\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content all-stars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 which is beneficial for your content to have better chances to rank.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to fix this<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/content-calendar-template-marketing\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create an editorial calendar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and get writing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it a priority to publish new educational content on your site 2-3 times per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again, it\u2019s not just the volume or quantity that counts, but the quality of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, this is easier said than done, especially if you don\u2019t have a content manager on staff yet. How often would you say that happens?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, Google\u2019s goal is to satisfy your inquiry as quickly as possible by bringing the most relevant and helpful content to the top of the search engine results pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to implement SEO best practices<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to alert Google that you\u2019re interested in ranking for certain topics, questions, or keywords, following SEO best practices is the way that you can communicate that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s too much to dive into here, the very condensed basics come down to optimized titles, keywords, headers, structure of articles, meta descriptions, and URLs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of SEO in 2022 and beyond is creating content that\u2019s more user-focused: whether it&#8217;s the actual topic and ways of honestly answering your prospects\u2019 questions, or visually providing the best structural\/formatting experience for users as they\u2019re reading through your site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While none of these best practices are necessarily rocket science, it\u2019s a fine art to get them all accomplished in every single article. It\u2019s almost like how the test of a fine chef is often how well they can cook something terribly simple \u2013 like an egg. Your site has poor organization\/navigation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Site organization is also an important factor in ranking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the structure of your site isn\u2019t clear, you may have a high number of users who end up on a page of your site and then \u201cbounce\u201d right off back to the SERP pages to try to get a better answer to their inquiry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what\u2019s called a bounce rate, and Google doesn\u2019t like it when it\u2019s too high. If more people are coming to your site and immediately leaving rather than sticking around and digesting more of your content, it alerts the search engines that your site probably isn\u2019t very good, and your site likely won\u2019t rank very well compared to your competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give users a clear map<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of a great user experience on a site is usually the navigation menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If users aren\u2019t able to clearly know what you do \u2013 and what their next action should be \u2013 after just a few seconds on your site, then it may be time to sit down and review your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/value-proposition-examples\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value proposition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and site navigation strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about offering some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/what-are-self-configuration-tools-why-do-you-need-them-on-your-website\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-configuration tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to give users the feeling that they\u2019re getting a personalized website experience that helps them get to what they\u2019re looking for in the quickest time possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, make sure your navigation menu labels and even blog categories are easy to grasp and understand quickly, without much additional thought required. Remember, you want to speak in their language, so stay away from jargon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. You\u2019re in a super competitive market<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen, some industries are going to be easier to rank for than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For an agency trying to rank for searches related to inbound marketing, for instance, it\u2019s going to be tough. (Think about it: We\u2019re a bunch of marketers talking about marketing. We\u2019re all trying to rank for many of the same keywords.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But imagine how many blast-resistant building manufacturers, for instance, are embracing creating this content on their sites? Probably not as many, if any at all. Those folks typically don\u2019t spend much time marketing; instead, they\u2019re building portable buildings that save people\u2019s lives on in the case of an explosion at an oil refinery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in fact, that\u2019s why our former blast-resistant building client, RedGuard, is ranking for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/definition-of-featured-snippet\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">featured snippets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (we call this Position Zero, because it\u2019s even better\/higher up than being in position one. Basically, it\u2019s Google gold!) for some of their first articles they ever published after working with us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/hubfs\/Featured-Snippet.png\" alt=\"Featured Snippet\" width=\"600\" style=\"width: 600px; display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you\u2019re one of them?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So yes, the industry and market you\u2019re in does matter, but not in the way that gives you an excuse to not follow the best practices listed in this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in one of those super-competitive spaces, it just means you have to be on your game even more. You need to cook that metaphorical egg (see reference in #6 if you\u2019re confused) as if you\u2019re Wolfgang Puck, as not just any good ol\u2019 fashioned sunny side up egg will work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This might mean going the extra mile with your content: having video on each of your pages, infographics, and images professionally designed to accompany your content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re in a competitive space, it just means your room for error is slightly less, and that even if you\u2019re doing everything right, it might take a little longer to see the rankings move up for your content. So if you\u2019re not a Featured Snippet yet, it might just take a little more time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might also mean your content strategy needs to be even more thoughtful and bold. What\u2019s an angle that hasn\u2019t been approached yet when it comes to your industry? How can you talk about it differently? What\u2019s an aspect of your field that\u2019s unrepresented?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating content around those areas will be vital for success in a competitive market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. You\u2019re not crediting a trustworthy author<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This builds off of the previous point about \u201call industries not being created equal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/google-e-a-t\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google released an E.A.T. update<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which meant that the author listed for blogs on sites was going to start being taken into account for rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This most heavily impacts specific content concerning personal health, medicine\/medical technology, and legal topics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, E.A.T. stands for Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to reward those sites that have a trusted industry expert as authors for content that\u2019s really going to impact people\u2019s health, medical treatment, or legal outlook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about it, do you want a random freelancer telling you about the newest updates to a medical procedure or health practice? Wouldn\u2019t you rather that information come from a trusted, experienced doctor or medical professional? I know I would! And Google does, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do about it<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in one of those industries, make sure you have an author listed for those articles who is reputable in that industry. Don\u2019t just list your company as the author.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, give authors a set bio page on the website and have it link back to their LinkedIn page to make it easier for the search engines to put the pieces together that this is an expert talking. Check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/team\/jolie-higazi\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMPACT\u2019s team pages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for an example of how this can look.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. You have a \u201cno-index\u201d tag set on your pages<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepcrawl.com\/blog\/best-practice\/noindex-disallow-nofollow\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no-index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meta tag is a set of coding that you can inject on your website pages to basically tell search engines not to crawl (and hence, rank) it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might think, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would anyone ever use that? Who WOULDN\u2019T want a page to rank in Google if it could?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is actually pretty common on specific website pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, you\u2019ll probably want this no-index setting on thank you pages for your offers or even on the downloads themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you didn\u2019t have it, it\u2019d be like someone passing go (not needing to submit your form) and collecting $200 (getting the download anyway)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, many times if you\u2019ve had a new site designed, developers may have had this tag originally added to your site pages while they were still being created and worked on and then may have forgotten to take it off once you published live for the world to see.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do about it<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, no-index coding should only be on specifically chosen pages of your site. If you\u2019re not sure if this is your situation, you can plug in a URL to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seositecheckup.com\/tools\/noindex-tag-test\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">site like this to test it for you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it does have the tag, that could be why it\u2019s not showing up in Google. Go into the back end of your content management system and remove those tags for that page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each platform looks different for how you can do this or how it\u2019s set up (whether on a page-by-page basis or global for whole sections of the site). To update the tag on a single website or landing page in HubSpot, for instance, just go to Settings and then remove the coding added for the no-index.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/hubfs\/No-Index-tag.png\" alt=\"No-Index tag\" width=\"600\" style=\"width: 600px; display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"\/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. You\u2019re not optimizing older posts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranking on the first page of Google isn&#8217;t a trophy you set on your wall and admire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a constantly moving target, and if you\u2019re not consistently doing your best to keep up with it, you will probably fall behind in the rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for content that you published eons ago that still isn\u2019t ranking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content may be out of date, missing a key element that people want to know about, or just have an outdated structure to it and such posts may need to be revisited and reworked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A comprehensive content strategy doesn\u2019t just include creating new posts, but also optimizing posts that have been on your site for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you do about it?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are likely dozens of articles that are worth revisiting for an opportunity to improve your ranking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, aiming to optimize <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALL <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your articles (depending on how much content you\u2019ve produced in the past) can be a very time extensive endeavor, and to be honest, it might not be worth tackling them all, especially if you\u2019re not sure <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you\u2019re trying to specifically optimize them for<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are specific \u201cbuckets\u201d (or categories) of articles you can identify that will have the most bang for your buck if you put some more time in them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These buckets of articles can include those with high bounce rates, those stuck on the second or third page of Google, and those that are getting lots of impressions on search pages but not a reasonable number of clicks associated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get started on your optimizing journey, check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-underperforming-content-with-historical-blog-optimization\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Historically Optimize Blog Content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to rank can get overwhelming. Start here.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, there are plenty of reasons why content or a site may not be ranking, and it can be tempting to try to optimize each and every detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s all about progress, not perfection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This list is by no means all-inclusive of every potential factor in not ranking. For instance, there might be deeper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/technical-seo-audit\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technical SEO issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or your keyword cluster strategy may not be effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this list should give you a good grasp of where your gaps are that can be improved starting even today. You\u2019ll notice that many of the issues boil down to the quality of the content on your site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, bear in mind that you may have a tendency to pick and choose which from the list above you want to take action on and which you don\u2019t. Unfortunately, without having the basics \u2013 a fast website with regularly-published, helpful, trustworthy content that\u2019s optimized for SEO \u2013 some of the other details may only get you so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most clients I work with as a content trainer, just tackling the issue of trust is a good framework to start with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So put yourself in the shoes of your prospects, take an honest look at your content (or ask someone else to review it), and gauge whether it\u2019s more <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helpful <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promotional <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read through it line by line and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a reader\u2019s perspective <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">honestly rate whether it\u2019s something users will feel is helpful or more sales-y.
