The results beat the company\u2019s guidance for bookings and revenues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2022\/01\/10\/take-two-buys-zynga-for-12-7b-enterprise-value\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Take-Two announced<\/a> in January that it was acquiring Zynga for an enterprise value of $12.7 billion, a big premium above its trading price. It\u2019s one of the biggest deals in gaming history, though it was dwarfed by January\u2019s announcement that Microsoft would buy Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. <\/p>\n<p>San Francisco-based Zynga\u2019s revenue was $695 million for the fourth quarter, up 13% year-over-year; But it\u2019s interesting to see one of gaming\u2019s biggest acquirers get acquired. That tells you the financial stakes that we are in as gaming\u2019s historic boom continues during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>While the pandemic has been a tragedy in lost lives and economic hardships, gaming is one of the few industries that is emerging stronger than before the coronavirus hit. People are still playing more than before, and the San Francisco firm has also benefited from its acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Zynga bought rivals aggressively under Gibeau, and the whole game industry has been following suit. In addition to StarLark and Chartboost, Zynga has been making regular acquisitions since the 2017 purchase of casual card games from Turkey\u2019s Peak Games for $100 million. In May 2018, Zynga bought <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2018\/06\/05\/buff-launches-blockchain-loyalty-program-for-gamers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gram Games<\/a> for $250 million, followed by the late 2018 acquisition of Empires &amp; Puzzles maker <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2019\/12\/09\/how-small-giant-games-got-acquired-by-zynga-and-lived-to-tell-the-tale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Small Giant Games<\/a> for $560 million.<\/p>\n<p>The big one came in June 2020 as Zynga acquired all of <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2020\/06\/01\/zynga-acquires-mobile-gaming-company-peak-for-1-8-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peak Games<\/a> for $1.8 billion. In October 2020, Zynga bought hypercasual game maker <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2020\/08\/05\/zynga-is-acquiring-hypercasual-mobile-game-firm-rollic-for-at-least-168-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rollic<\/a> for $168 million. It took a step into PC games with the acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2021\/03\/03\/zynga-acquires-diablo-co-creators-echtra-games-in-expansion-to-pc-and-consoles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Echtra Games<\/a>, which was started by the makers of the Torchlight series. And it acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2021\/05\/05\/zynga-agrees-to-buy-mobile-ad-and-monetization-firm-chartboost-for-250-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chartboost<\/a> for $200 million. Zynga said the integration with Chartboost was making significant progress as the company creates a next-gen mobile ad platform.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Zynga added Golf Rival as a new franchise, thanks to the closing of its acquisition of China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2021\/08\/05\/zynga-acquires-starlark-studio-and-golf-rival-game-for-525m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StarLark<\/a> for $525 million. The company has just started looking into blockchain games, hiring Matthew Wolf as the head of that effort.<\/p>\n<p>Gibeau said in th previous quarter the company has been talking a lot about nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain, and they think there is a place for it where players can own their content.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-latest-on-idfa\">Latest on IDFA?<\/h2>\n<p>Apple changed the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) so that people can more easily opt-out of being tracked. That\u2019s good for user privacy. But it makes it harder to target ads at gamers who spend money, which is what game companies have had to do in the absence of great discovery on iOS devices. Without access to IDFA data, game companies will have a harder time finding users. Zynga had noted previously that IDFA was hurting the ability to acquire more users, and that is one of the reasons its stock price fell, enabling Take-Two to acquire Zynga.<\/p>\n<p>Zynga said that it believes the IDFA issues are behind it now.<\/p>\n<h2>Earnings details<\/h2>\n<p>The stock market reaction to Zynga\u2019s results has historically been driven by whether it hits revenue or earnings targets. But it\u2019s complicated, because Zynga is required to report some revenue later than when it actually receives it (like when a user buys in-game currency but doesn\u2019t use it until much later). Zynga did not release any outlook for the year or quarter ahead.
