Here\u2019s a look at the best encryption you should be using to secure your Wi-Fi router in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><a name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\"\/>The Best Wi-Fi Encryption is WPA3<\/h2>\n<p>As of February 2022, the best Wi-Fi security standard is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/339765\/what-is-wpa3-and-when-will-i-get-it-on-my-wi-fi\/\">Wi-Fi Protected Access Version 3<\/a>, or WPA3 for short. Introduced in 2018 by the Wi-Fi Alliance, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wi-fi.org\/discover-wi-fi\/security\">several variations<\/a> of the WPA3 standard:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>WPA3-Personal:<\/strong> This is designed for individual and home Wi-Fi users. For ease-of-use, it allows you to pick your own arbitrary password, including one that might not be optimally secure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WPA3-Enterprise:<\/strong> This standard enforces minimum 128-bit authentication encryption, 256-bit key derivation encryption, and the use of an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RADIUS\">authentication server<\/a> instead of a password. It also utilizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wi-fi.org\/knowledge-center\/faq\/what-are-protected-management-frames\">Protected Management Frames<\/a> for greater hack protection, and imposes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjq3q_68uP1AhVlI0QIHWlQCw0QFnoECAcQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mdpi.com%2F2076-3417%2F10%2F21%2F7879%2Fpdf&amp;usg=AOvVaw14NQiNaCPdSfsWPJr96Cwg\">other authentication requirements<\/a> to secure the network.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WPA3-Enterprise with 192-bit Mode:<\/strong> This is similar to WPA3-Enterprise but with the option for minimum 192-bit encryption instead of 128-bit. It also ups the authentication encryption to 256-bit and the key encryption to 384-bit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For home Wi-Fi users, the best choice is WPA3-Personal, since it won\u2019t require a deep knowledge of wireless security to configure properly. Or maybe your router doesn\u2019t support it either. If that\u2019s the case, you have several options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use WPA2 Instead:<\/strong> The older standards called WPA2-Personal and WPA2-Enterprise are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krackattacks.com\">insecure<\/a> and have been compromised, but are still better than older Wi-Fi security standards. If you use WPA2 with AES encryption, hackers can <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2017\/10\/how-the-krack-attack-destroys-nearly-all-wi-fi-security\/\">intercept or inject data<\/a> but not recover security keys (for example, the Wi-Fi password). If you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/204697\/wi-fi-security-should-you-use-wpa2-aes-wpa2-tkip-or-both\/\">WPA2-TKIP<\/a>, hackers can recover security keys as well and connect to your network, so avoid WPA2-TKIP completely.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use a Transitional WPA2\/WPA3 Mode: <\/strong>Many consumer Wi-Fi routers that support WPA3 also support a WPA3\/WPA2 transitional mode that allows connections from devices using either WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. That way you can connect with WPA3 when possible, but also support legacy WPA2 devices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upgrade Your Devices:<\/strong> If already have a router that supports WPA3, you could purchase new devices or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/243330\/how-to-choose-a-usb-wi-fi-adapter-for-your-laptop\/\">Wi-Fi adapters<\/a> that support WPA3 and discontinue using older devices that don\u2019t support WPA3. There are more out there, but these are the most prominent ones:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy):<\/strong> This ancient wireless security standard from 1997 was <a href=\"https:\/\/null-byte.wonderhowto.com\/how-to\/hack-wi-fi-hunting-down-cracking-wep-networks-0183712\/\">compromised in 2005<\/a>, but had already been <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080417005957\/http:\/\/lirent.net\/wifi\/what-is-a-wep-key.html\">deprecated in 2004<\/a>. It is easy to crack quickly. Definitely do not use WEP.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WPA Version 1:<\/strong> Introduced in 2003, WPA version 1 (or plain \u201cWPA\u201d with no number beside it) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/531915\/wifi_hacked.html\">compromised in 2008<\/a> and again <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.packetstormsecurity.net\/papers\/wireless\/A_Practical_Message_Falsification_Attack_On_WPA.pdf\">in 2009<\/a> to a greater extent. The crack is fast, sometimes taking <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2009-08-wpa-wi-fi-encryption-sixty-seconds.html\">less than a minute<\/a>. Do not use WPA1.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WPA2-TKIP:<\/strong> WPA Version 2 using TKIP encryption was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/204697\/wi-fi-security-should-you-use-wpa2-aes-wpa2-tkip-or-both\/\">cracked in 2017<\/a> using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krackattacks.com\">KRACK method<\/a>, allowing hackers to reveal private security keys or passwords. As noted above, if you have to use WPA2, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/204697\/wi-fi-security-should-you-use-wpa2-aes-wpa2-tkip-or-both\/\">use AES encryption<\/a> instead. As mentioned above, WPA2-AES has been <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2017\/10\/how-the-krack-attack-destroys-nearly-all-wi-fi-security\/\">compromised as well<\/a>, but not to the same extent\u2014yet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):<\/strong> This feature allows you to quickly connect a device to a Wi-Fi access point by pressing a button. The PIN involved is short and can be guessed with a brute-force attack, and anyone with physical access to the router can connect to your network. Avoid WPS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/176124\/wi-fi-protected-setup-wps-is-insecure-heres-why-you-should-disable-it\/\">disable it<\/a> if possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><a name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\"\/>How Do I Change My Router\u2019s Wi-Fi Security Settings?<\/h2>\n<p>To check or change your router or access point\u2019s Wi-Fi security settings, you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/131338\/how-to-access-your-router-if-you-forget-the-password\/\">log in to the device\u2019s configuration interface<\/a>. Most devices allow you to connect through a special local web address in a browser (such as 192.168.0.01), and others also allow you to configure them through a smartphone app. Check your router\u2019s documentation to find out how to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re logged in, look for labels like \u201cWireless Security,\u201d \u201cWireless Configuration,\u201d \u201cSecurity Level,\u201d \u201cSSID Setup,\u201d or something similar.
