Total recurring revenue was $364m, perpetual software licenses and hardware was down 44 per cent to $19m, and consulting services fell 17 per cent to $92m.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n                <\/noscript>\n            <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Teradata also posted full-year numbers, signalling total revenue was up four per cent to $1.9bn, while operating income was $231m versus $16m in the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>The data warehouse biz is still trying to rid the world of the perception that it is an on-prem business in the wake of pressure from investors who flocked to Snowflake\u2019s vision of the cloud-native data warehouse with its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/12\/15\/a_flurry_of_data_warehouse\/\" rel=\"noopener\">spectacular IPO<\/a> in late 2020.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YgMASJgtpVi3rmVAP0Q1FgAAANA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Cloud still accounts for less than 11 per cent of its total revenue, indicating it has some way to go, although winning in the public cloud has contributed to the lion\u2019s share of its growth of late.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Steve McMillan said on a conference call with analysts that it was winning the migration battle and managing to avoid leaking customers to cloud rivals. UK-based NatWest Group was an example of a customer migrating its on-prem data center to Teradata\u2019s Vantage cloud platform on AWS.<\/p>\n<p>The results reflect another shift in Teradata\u2019s thinking. It is happy to see its once-lucrative on-prem consultancy business wither on the vine for the sake of luring the big consultancies to get in on the cloud migrations.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YgMASJgtpVi3rmVAP0Q1FgAAANA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/databases&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YgMASJgtpVi3rmVAP0Q1FgAAANA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>The year-over-year revenue decline was largely down to \u201cthe strategic shift in the consulting business,\u201d said CFO Claire Bramley.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, McMillan said Teradata was \u201cseeing fantastic traction with partners, especially as we strategically realign the company.\u201d Partnerships with Accenture and Deloitte were testimony to that move, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also underscored a shift in Teradata\u2019s main USP: whereas once it boasted using query optimization and concurrency to get more bang from its highly engineered on-prem appliances, Teradata now uses the same argument to pitch for customers wanting efficiency in a cloud data warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Rival cloud system <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/09\/17\/snowflake_financial_services_data_cloud\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Snowflake<\/a> has given customers nasty shocks with its highly scalable distributed system, some have argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur scale of enterprise concurrency is designed so that customers can have a single connected data environment with the lowest total cost of ownership in the market,\u201d McMillan said, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/03\/17\/teradata_ceo_interview\/\" rel=\"noopener\">repeating<\/a> a point he made to <em>The Register<\/em> last year.<\/p>\n<p>But Teradata has had to abandon the idea that if you want to do enterprise analytics, you\u2019re best off getting data onto one of its databases first. Instead, it is now talking of a \u201cquery fabric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating a query fabric that sits on top of your data fabric, so that you can get the best out of your data no matter where it is,\u201d McMillan said.<\/p>\n<p>The move includes querying data held in rival data warehouses, including Google\u2019s. \u201cWe expanded our native QueryGrid connector to Google BigQuery, allowing customers to combine data in Vantage with data in BigQuery.
