Read on to look at a handful of before and after examples from the Facebook Ad Library. We\u2019ll cover the anatomy of a Facebook ad, jump into the examples, then finish off with some tips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jump to:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h2>Facebook ad copy 101<\/h2>\n<p>Before we get into the examples, let\u2019s first look at the different parts of a Facebook ad:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> the copy that appears at the top, below your account name and above the ad creative. Only the first 125 characters will show, but you can write more (more on that later).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creative:<\/strong> the image, which can be a static image, carousel, animated image, or video. The benefits are the \u201cwhy\u201d (why you should read\/buy\/upgrade\/etc) and the features are the \u201chow\u201d (how you\u2019ll get the benefit).<\/p>\n<h3>Before<\/h3>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2016\/05\/23\/facebook-ad-examples\">Facebook ad example<\/a> below, the ratio of peanut butter (benefits) to jelly (features) is making this sandwich just a tad too sweet. We read:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> <em>Our beautifully designed app is complete with daily information and week-by-week guides for life\u2019s most exciting journey. And that could be the case with this ad. Even still, purchase intent is lower on Facebook so it\u2019s a good idea to include at least one benefit to balance things out.<\/p>\n<h3>After<\/h3>\n<p>Ah, that\u2019s more like it. In a different Pregnancy+ App ad, we read:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> <em>Prepare for your baby\u2019s arrival with our Pregnancy+ app.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Image text:<\/strong> <em>How will you stay on top of your pregnancy?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headline:<\/strong><em> Download the Most Loved Pregnancy App<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/facebook-ad-copy-features-benefits-social-proof.png\" alt=\"facebook ad copy examples - features and benefits\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56625\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/facebook-ad-copy-features-benefits-social-proof.png 720w, https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/facebook-ad-copy-features-benefits-social-proof-480x270.png 480w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 720px, 100vw\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now I have a reason to be interested in this app (to be ready for my baby). And the features (health and wellbeing tips, body changes, baby development, and more) help explain how I\u2019ll attain this benefit. And the headline is not only a clear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2016\/03\/07\/call-to-action-marketing\">call to action<\/a> but it also nicely incorporates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2017\/01\/10\/social-proof-guide\">social proof<\/a> for added appeal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>?  Takeaway:<\/strong> The right ratio of features to benefits in your ad copy will vary by offering, industry, and your targeting, but there should rarely ever just be one.<br \/><a id=\"values\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Values-focused Facebook ad copy<\/h2>\n<p>Every brand needs to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/06\/09\/company-core-values\">established core values<\/a>, regardless of whether you talk about them in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2017\/01\/12\/how-to-write-great-advertising-copy\">ad copy<\/a>. But for industries where trust is a major factor, like home services, real estate, and healthcare, this is the way to go. People are more attracted to safe and traditional here than disruptive and edgy.<\/p>\n<h3>Before<\/h3>\n<p>The dentist ad below for a free new patient exam has the right idea\u2014to share its philosophy and personal messages from each dentist. But there is so much focus on values that the offer hardly stands out.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> Let\u2019s just say it\u2019s 213 words and 1197 characters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Image text:<\/strong> <em>Welcome! from your [town name] dentists<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headline:<\/strong> <em>FREE New Patients Dental Exam<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Description:<\/strong> <em>Call &amp; schedule your appointment today!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/facebook-ad-copy-example-long-primary-text-dental.png\" alt=\"facebook ad copy example - long primary text\" width=\"1000\" height=\"534\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57024\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/facebook-ad-copy-example-long-primary-text-dental.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/facebook-ad-copy-example-long-primary-text-dental-980x523.png 980w, https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/facebook-ad-copy-example-long-primary-text-dental-480x256.png 480w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2020\/01\/22\/marketing-copy\">decent marketing copy<\/a>, it\u2019s a lot of primary text for a scrolling Facebook user (Facebook recommends 125 characters) and better suited for an about us page. (But I will say, an <a href=\"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/blog\/facebook-ad-copy-length-experiment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experiment by Ad Espresso<\/a> shows that long copy can actually be successful in some scenarios, so maybe that was the case with this ad.)<\/p>\n<p>And as mentioned above, the true offer (free new patient exam) and call to action (book an appointment) get drowned out by the second call to action (to welcome the new dentists) which is emphasized in the primary text and ad creative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>?  Takeaway: <\/strong>Long primary text works in some cases, but you\u2019ll want those first 125 characters to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2017\/01\/12\/how-to-write-great-advertising-copy\">compelling-enough copy<\/a> to get the user to tap the ol\u2019 \u201cRead more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>After<\/h3>\n<p>This copy is much better! The primary text distills all 213 words in the above Facebook ad copy into just 19:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text: <\/strong><em>You deserve to be treated with respect and compassion, and that\u2019s the foundation of our philosophy of dental care.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Image text: <\/strong><em>Your Health. Your Style. Is it the in-office dental savings plan? Or something different? Pair this primary text and creative with the headline and description above, and this Facebook ad copy would be<\/p>\n<p><strong>? Takeaway: <\/strong>Facebook ad headlines are not the focal point of the ad as with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2019\/04\/22\/google-ad-copy-mistakes\">Google ad copy<\/a>. The creative is the focal point, so it either needs to convey the message of the ad on its own; or be intriguing enough to get someone to read the headline.<br \/><a id=\"painpoint\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Pain point-focused Facebook ad copy<\/h2>\n<p>Features and benefits are great, but speaking to the pain points in your ad that they solve is even better. This is where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/05\/03\/emotional-marketing-copy\">emotional copywriting<\/a> thrives.<\/p>\n<h3>Before<\/h3>\n<p>The intended message for this TurboTax (TT) Facebook ad is a good one: TT is empowering you to say no to the pain point of waiting on the IRS for your tax refund. But without the primary text, it doesn\u2019t come through clearly. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> <em>With TurboTax, get a Refund Advance in as little as 1 hour from IRS e-file accept (est. late-Jan). $0 loan fees, 0% APR.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Image copy:<\/strong> <em>Refund Advance. Don\u2019t play the waiting game. Then the sign the woman is holding says $4,000; talk about fast.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headline:<\/strong> <em>Don\u2019t wait!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Description:<\/strong> <em>America\u2019s #1 Free Tax Prep Provider. Over 40 million returns were prepared last year with TurboTax. Why Wait\u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/facebook-ad-copy-example-unclear-painpoint.png\" alt=\"facebook ad copy example - pain point not clear\" width=\"720\" height=\"524\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56631\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/facebook-ad-copy-example-unclear-painpoint.png 720w, https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/facebook-ad-copy-example-unclear-painpoint-480x349.png 480w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 720px, 100vw\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This could just be me, but here\u2019s where I get tripped up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t play the waiting game\u201d alerts me that I could be doing something I shouldn\u2019t, so it catches my attention, but it doesn\u2019t feel like a pain point that TurboTax is empowering me to eliminate.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t wait!\u201d right next to \u201cInstall now\u201d sounds more like the classic \u201cDon\u2019t wait, act now!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/10\/05\/best-call-to-action-phrases\">call to action phrase<\/a>\u2014which is fine\u2014but it doesn\u2019t convey the intended message here, that your pain point of waiting can be solved with the TT app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>?  Takeaway: <\/strong>If you\u2019re going to incorporate pain points into your ad, apply the pain-agitate-solution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2020\/04\/16\/copywriting-formulas\">copywriting formula<\/a> to drive that pain point home.<\/p>\n<h3>After<\/h3>\n<p>Another version of this ad focuses less on the pain point and more on the benefit: up to a $4000 cash advance on your refund.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> same as above<\/li>\n<li><strong>Image text:<\/strong> <em>You could get up to a $4,000 cash advance on your refund.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headline:<\/strong> <em>Don\u2019t wait!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Description:<\/strong> <em>Taxes redefined. The description is also much better (in my opinion). While it doesn\u2019t have the social proof of the version above, it\u2019s quicker and more memorable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>?  Takeaway: <\/strong>It all comes down to testing. I have no doubt that a major brand knows what it\u2019s doing with its ads. These ad variations wouldn\u2019t exist if they didn\u2019t get results, so clearly, TT is doing its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/05\/11\/facebook-ab-testing\"> Facebook A\/B testing<\/a> homework.<\/p>\n<h3>After after<\/h3>\n<p>I have nothing against TT so I wanted to throw in a solid example of Facebook ad copy all around. Even the subtle difference between \u201cInstall\u201d and \u201cInstall now\u201d can make a significant difference in performance. <\/p>\n<h3>Before<\/h3>\n<p> The exclamation points in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2018\/02\/06\/real-estate-facebook-ads\">real estate Facebook ad example<\/a> give off a touch of urgency, but it could be stronger.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text: <\/strong><em>House hunting in Port St Lucie? Which then naturally shifts over to the \u201crates are low\u201d reason, and then if the ad has your attention, you\u2019ll get to the supporting primary text. It\u2019s a nice flow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>? Takeaway: <\/strong>Everyone adds urgency to their ad copy, but not everyone supports it with details as to <em>why <\/em>there is urgency. Incorporate those and your Facebook ad will stand out.<br \/><a id=\"testimonial\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Testimonial Facebook ad copy<\/h2>\n<p>Given (1) <a href=\"https:\/\/localiq.com\/blog\/online-review-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how powerful online reviews are<\/a> and (2) the fact that testimonials are basically reviews on steroids, testimonial ad copy is the way to go.<\/p>\n<h3>Before<\/h3>\n<p>So I love this business\u2019s approach with using a real customer and a DIY video (gives it more of a human and trustworthy feel), but I take issue with a few things. The ad reads:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong><em> What distinguishes [name] from other competitors? Quite simply, it is our experience, dependability, and commitment to 100% satisfaction guaranteed! I\u2019m more likely to remember that this customer\u2019s name is Shasta than anything she\u2019s saying in the video. Same with you?<\/p>\n<p>Problem #2: The primary text is cookie-cutter generic copy. The \u201cexperience, dependability, and commitment to 100% satisfaction guaranteed\u201d could be more authentic with either more interesting words or simply more details like \u201c65 years of experience\u201d or \u201c4.8 star rating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>? Takeaway: <\/strong>Replace or modify generic words to write more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/07\/06\/how-to-write-copy-that-sells#credible\">credible ad copy<\/a> and if you have a video, make sure its message can be conveyed without the sound on.<\/p>\n<h3>After<\/h3>\n<p>Now this is the way to do it. The primary text here is three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2020\/09\/16\/get-more-google-reviews\">customer review<\/a> quotes. Nothing special, but much more effective than the generic statement in the above version.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary text:<\/strong> <em>\u201cI couldn\u2019t have asked for better service.\u201d \/\/ \u201c<\/em><em>They explained everything and offered me lots of good advice.\u201d \/\/ Very professional and caring. And the headline still gives credibility but it\u2019s less friendly and the 65 years feels stronger. Use this version\u2019s primary text in the previous example, and we\u2019d have a great Facebook ad.<\/p>\n<p>? <strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> What your customers have to say about your business\u2014even if it\u2019s simple\u2014 carries more weight and credibility than what you have to say about it.<br \/><a id=\"repetition\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Repetition-style Facebook ad copy<\/h2>\n<p>Repetition is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2021\/09\/01\/psychology-copywriting-tips-examples\">psychological copywriting technique<\/a> based on the mere exposure effect (and also common sense), but there\u2019s a right and a wrong way to do it.<\/p>\n<h3>After<\/h3>\n<p>No mistake here. There is no \u201cbefore\u201d version because SoFi nails repetition in both of these Facebook ad examples. In this first one, we see perfect implementation of overt repetition in the ad\u2019s creative:<\/p>\n<p><em>Want to bypass the fees?<br \/>No origination fees.<br \/>No pre-payment fees.<br \/>No late fees.
