(The numbers only get worse in years two, three, and beyond)<\/p>\n<p>Even after running my own business for over a decade, the bumps and bruises keep coming. Let me tell you, they still hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Some days I feel like giving up\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I\u2019m lucky enough to have made it over the hump. The lessons I learned from near failure in years one, two, and three are the very things that drive me to continue on today.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, as the statistics confirm, most people don\u2019t make it that far. And there are segments of our population that face additional roadblocks to success. Especially compared with me, a white male entrepreneur, who like it or not\u2026 has a better pathway to opportunities that keep my business running, such as finance.<\/p>\n<p>The global pandemic has only accelerated this gap, with African American-owned businesses closing their doors at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/03\/black-owned-businesses-are-struggling-to-stay-afloat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">twice the rate of their white counterparts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\" style=\"margin:8px 0;clear:both;\">\n<div class=\"lead-magnet in-post lm01\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Traffic Guide\" height=\"353\" width=\"250\" style=\"box-shadow:5px 5px 5px rgba(0,0,0,.25);\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-akebd.nitrocdn.com\/bCWGvmHIgAlrWzdjLoGQbzvNeZiguKmJ\/assets\/static\/optimized\/rev-a1e8f54\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/traffic-cover.png\" class=\"nitro-lazy\" nitro-lazy-empty=\"\" id=\"MjM0OjE3OQ==-1\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Free Download<\/h2>\n<h3>The Ultimate Guide to Website Traffic for Business<\/h3>\n<p>  <template data-nitro-marker-id=\"9e85a4b99bcb27dac1e397c110ef6744-1\"\/><template data-nitro-marker-id=\"5983cecab4915dd97fafae519315c093-1\"\/><template data-nitro-marker-id=\"4ab8be0ea20f969dd1a0c0d18b6695d4-1\"\/><template data-nitro-marker-id=\"b4c174a0900c1b2d28f8d6c3a7fede51-1\"\/><template data-nitro-marker-id=\"d398ee98dd62e16086a4d67c3512dc3c-1\"\/><template data-nitro-marker-id=\"f554872dfa9a4c517eb1fd335a50eb80-1\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><a\/>Access to finance for underserved entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n<p>A whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/03\/black-owned-businesses-are-struggling-to-stay-afloat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">80% of black-owned businesses<\/a> fail in the first 18 months, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidantfinancial.com\/small-business-trends\/african-americans-in-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">38% of African American entrepreneurs<\/a> quoting lack of capital as their biggest challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Many attribute the gap in financial access to a lack of diversity in venture capital, with <a href=\"https:\/\/centsai.com\/earn-money\/entrepreneurship\/success-challenges-black-entrepreneurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">less than 15% of financial professionals<\/a> from minority backgrounds. But access to finance runs far deeper than just this, there is a cycle of wealth disparity that means minority founders are less likely to own the type of collateral that banks will secure loans against.<\/p>\n<p>Minority entrepreneurs are up against it from day one \u2013 not to mention they have an in-built distrust towards organizations outside their communities due to the history of discrimination in the USA.<\/p>\n<h2><a\/>Why do I care and why should you?<\/h2>\n<p>I recently teamed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbullas.com\/go\/bigcommerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">BigCommerce<\/a> for a Facebook Live conversation to address this concerning trend head-on and discuss what entrepreneurs, like you and me, can do to balance the equation. Even the playing field. Fight against the inequality.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my notes from the discussion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The global pandemic has had a significantly greater impact on minority entrepreneurs, with upward of 40% of Black-owned businesses closing their doors<\/li>\n<li>If existing Black-owned companies in the USA made the <em>same average revenue<\/em> as white-owned companies in the same field it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-and-social-sector\/our-insights\/building-supportive-ecosystems-for-black-owned-us-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">add almost $200 billion to the GDP<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Despite companies like Facebook contributing $40 million in grants to Black-owned businesses in recent years, much more needs to be done at a grassroots level<\/li>\n<li>Changing perceptions, inequalities, and access for Black entrepreneurs will require years of combined efforts from institutions, social groups, and supporting businesses<\/li>\n<li>However, we can all make a difference with small contributions to the greater good. Businesses need to work together to break down barriers and provide new opportunities for underserved entrepreneurs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a\/>Small changes can result in a big impact<\/h2>\n<p>Change at a cultural and institutional level is complex and cumbersome.<\/p>\n<p>It can take decades to see the fruits of today\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p>But the social media world we live in has a way of accelerating change at scale. Ideas gain momentum at a much faster rate when they are associated with a cause of meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Providing greater opportunities to underserved entrepreneurs is certainly one of those causes.<\/p>\n<p>Not only would a change in the way we support minority entrepreneurs benefit the community, but as stated above, the economy will get a healthy boost, too.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, big companies can drop millions of dollars into this cause to move the needle.
