Every year, they publish a report that shares a wealth of fascinating stats, such as the relative popularity of different apps. This is another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/chiefmartec.com\/2022\/01\/saas-stacks-keep-growing-is-there-also-a-relationship-between-choice-and-utilization\/\">ground-truth empirical data about tech stacks<\/a> that I find highly credible.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okta.com\/businesses-at-work\/\">2022 edition of Okta\u2019s report<\/a>, just released, the most interesting chart is the one I\u2019ve excerpted above. It shows that companies who use Microsoft 365 apps and platforms \u2014 which collectively span everything from docs and spreadsheets to development platforms and videoconferencing \u2014 have also been increasing their adoption of \u201coverlapping\u201d apps and platforms from other companies.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, they are Microsoft 365 customers. But some prefer AWS over Azure. Or Salesforce over Dynamics. Or Slack and Zoom over Teams. Or Smartsheet over Excel. Or Tableau over PowerBI.<\/p>\n<p>For each of those apps, you can follow their light-to-dark-colored dots in the chart steadily sliding left to right, year-over-year. The adoption of best-of-breed apps, at least within the context of Microsoft 365, has unmistakably been growing.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of Box, which has been going in the exact opposite direction (sorry, Box). I personally like Box, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/levie\">their CEO\u2019s Twitter account<\/a> is pure gold. But out of all the apps in the list, it seems to me their core product might be the easiest for Microsoft to commoditize from within the Office 365 environment.<\/p>\n<p>Is this best-of-breed trend representative of stacks overall, especially for martech?<\/p>\n<p>It certainly aligns with the <a href=\"https:\/\/chiefmartec.com\/2021\/09\/latest-data-size-tech-stacks-philosophical-question-shadow\/\">continued growth in stacks<\/a> we\u2019ve seen in other aggregate data from the SaaS Management Platforms. And many of the apps overlapping with Microsoft 365 are part of the martech world.<\/p>\n<p>But I can hear the objection to the methodology. \u201cHey, just because I use Microsoft Word doesn\u2019t mean that I want to use Microsoft Dynamics as my CRM. Those are apples and oranges!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough. But it\u2019s an interesting thought experiment. If the world\u2019s second-largest, $2.3 trillion software company \u2014 and the world\u2019s first-largest, $2.8 trillion Apple, who doesn\u2019t even touch most of these app categories \u2014 can\u2019t satisfy you with everything from their portfolio, then who could? Two things worth noting:<\/p>\n<p>First \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chiefmartec\/status\/1490078084908949505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wowzers<\/a> \u2014 the distance between AWS and everyone else is stunning.<\/p>\n<p>But second, and more relevant to my narrative, the growth in adoption of all of these cloud platforms \u2014 steep up-and-to-the-right climbs \u2014 is growth in their use by developers to create <em>more<\/em> software. They are the engine behind <a href=\"https:\/\/chiefmartec.com\/2020\/12\/martech-2030-trend-3-great-app-explosion\/\">The Great App Explosion<\/a>.
