If you need to troubleshoot Google Chrome\u2014or just want a leaner, faster experience\u2014it can be helpful to temporarily run the browser with all of your extensions<\/a> disabled. There\u2019s an easy way to do it in Windows 10 or Windows 11, but it\u2019s not obvious. We\u2019ll show you how.<\/p>\n

First, you\u2019ll need to create a desktop shortcut for the Chrome application. The following instructions are the same for Windows 10 and Windows 11. To get started, right-click an empty spot on your desktop and select New > Shortcut.<\/p>\n

In the \u201cCreate Shortcut\u201d dialog, click \u201cBrowse.\u201d When the \u201cBrowse for Files or Folders\u201d window opens, navigate to the location where you\u2019ve installed Google Chrome by clicking the arrows beside each sub-folder as you open them.<\/p>\n

Chrome is usually installed under C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Chrome\\Application. (If it\u2019s not in \u201cProgram Files,\u201d also try \u201cProgram Files (x86)\u201d on your C: drive.)<\/p>\n

When you see chrome.exe<\/code>, select it and click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in the \u201cCreate Shortcut\u201d window, locate the text input box labeled \u201cType the location of the item,\u201d which should already be filled with a path similar to \"C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Chrome\\Application\\chrome.exe\"<\/code> .<\/p>\n

Click the text input box just after the last quotation mark to place a blinking cursor there.<\/p>\n

In that text box, press space once, then type the following text:<\/p>\n

--disable-extensions<\/pre>\n
When you\u2019re finished, the entire contents of the text box should look similar to the following,\u00a0although your exact path may be different):<\/p>\n
\"C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Chrome\\Application\\chrome.exe\" --disable-extensions<\/pre>\n
Click \u201cNext\u201d to continue.<\/p>\n

On the next page, use the text box to name the shortcut \u201cChrome (Extensions Disabled)\u201d or something memorable that will remind you this is a special shortcut. Then click \u201cFinish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your new \u201cChrome (Extensions Disabled)\u201d shortcut will appear on your desktop. You can move this desktop to other locations on your PC as well (but you sadly can\u2019t drag it to the Start menu or taskbar in Windows 11).<\/p>\n
To use it, double-click the shortcut, and Chrome will open with no extensions loaded. If you have a lot of extensions installed, you\u00a0may notice that the browser loads faster and feels more speedy without them. Pretty nice!<\/p>\n

To run Chrome with extensions enabled again, close Chrome completely<\/a>, then launch the browser using your usual method, such as a pinned icon on your taskbar or from the Start menu.<\/p>\n
