More than 2,200 \u201ccopyright blocks\u201d from Nintendo. For GilvaSunner, this was the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back, following numerous other takedowns in the 11-plus years the channel had been on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve decided that at this point it\u2019s really not worth it to keep the channel up any longer,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GilvaSunner\/status\/1488555303918616581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GilvaSunner\/status\/1488555303918616581\" data-lasso-id=\"177545\">GilvaSunner said in a February 1st tweet<\/a>. \u201cThere are many different opinions over what is happening and that\u2019s fine! I can understand pretty much all sides. I know this is disappointing to read for a lot of you, but I hope you can respect my decision to want to move on at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RIP Gilvasunner\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UycEJ52lXHs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The loss of GilvaSunner\u2019s channel was a significant blow to many, myself included, as it was often one of the few ways to listen to a large selection of video game music, particularly Nintendo\u2019s. I\u2019m someone whose musical tastes have often skewed towards soundtracks over mainstream albums, especially as I like to have songs on in the background while writing. You can see, then, why GilvaSunner would be so appealing to me. But it certainly wasn\u2019t just me; prior to the shutdown, GilvaSunner\u2019s channel had surpassed 1.5 billion total views, so it clearly had a massive audience. That\u2019s why it\u2019s sad, to say the least, that GilvaSunner is no longer around.<\/p>\n<p>But if I\u2019m being honest, it also ticks me off. It\u2019s the latest bafflingly out-of-touch move from Nintendo, a company that otherwise puts out consistently great games and hardware. That\u2019s because the company, to this day, <em>refuses<\/em> to make its music available on streaming platforms. While music from the likes of\u00a0<em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Mario\u00a0<\/em>is undeniably iconic, there is, perplexingly, no official way to listen to it \u2014 no Spotify, Apple Music or even whole OSTs to purchase and download.<\/p>\n<p>When a company routinely declines to make its software available, it\u2019s understandable that people would take it upon themselves, like GilvaSunner did, to offer solutions. It\u2019s a big reason why fans<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/gaming\/nintendo-romuniverse-lawsuit-game-preservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/gaming\/nintendo-romuniverse-lawsuit-game-preservation\" data-lasso-id=\"177617\"> pirate Nintendo games<\/a>; the company <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/06\/26\/nintendo-please-give-us-virtual-console-on-switch\/\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/06\/26\/nintendo-please-give-us-virtual-console-on-switch\/\" data-lasso-id=\"177618\">f<\/a>ails to preserve many of its <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/06\/26\/nintendo-please-give-us-virtual-console-on-switch\/\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/06\/26\/nintendo-please-give-us-virtual-console-on-switch\/\" data-lasso-id=\"177820\">classic games on modern systems<\/a>. But while it\u2019s more understandable that Nintendo would crack down on piracy, its constant takedowns of YouTube uploads of mere songs is head-scratching. In the case of GilvaSunner, the videos weren\u2019t monetized and they didn\u2019t profit from them in any other way, like Patreon. So, Nintendo, you\u2019re going to remove videos containing music from your games <em>and\u00a0<\/em>not even make said music available elsewhere? What? And no \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/12\/16\/18140656\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-music-nintendo-switch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/12\/16\/18140656\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-music-nintendo-switch\" data-lasso-id=\"177619\"><em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em>\u2018s in-game music player is not at all a solution<\/a>; even if you own the game, no one should have to lug around a Switch like an MP3 player.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cI definitely don\u2019t just speak for myself when I say that this music is extremely meaningful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nintendo\u2019s nonsensical aversion to music streaming was even more pronounced earlier this week when The Pok\u00e9mon Company \u2014 in which it holds a minority stake \u2014 launched the \u201cPok\u00e9mon DP Sound Library,\u201d an official hub to access and sample music from <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/11\/19\/pokemon-brilliant-diamond-shining-pearl-review\/\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/11\/19\/pokemon-brilliant-diamond-shining-pearl-review\/\" data-lasso-id=\"177546\"><em>Pok\u00e9mon Diamond\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Pearl<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em>Although these are Nintendo-published games, The Pok\u00e9mon Company ultimately owns and operates the series, which is undoubtedly why this even happened. Regardless, it feels bizarre to have some <em>Pok\u00e9mon\u00a0<\/em>music \u2014 a Nintendo-exclusive franchise \u2014 while missing anything from\u00a0<em>Mario<\/em> and <em>Zelda<\/em> or even, say,\u00a0<em>Kirby<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Donkey Kong<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Metroid\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Fire Emblem<\/em>. (The lack of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2019\/07\/25\/fire-emblem-three-houses-nintendo-switch-review\/\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2019\/07\/25\/fire-emblem-three-houses-nintendo-switch-review\/\" data-lasso-id=\"177808\">Fire Emblem: Three Houses<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>tracks especially hurts \u2014 it\u2019s one of my all-time favourite Nintendo games.)<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nobuo Uematsu Discusses The Final Fantasy Main Theme\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IH33-HJnrsg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>What makes the situation even worse is that so many other gaming companies have wisely taken to bringing their music to streaming. Square Enix\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/final-fantasy-vii-remake-original-soundtrack\/1513522478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/final-fantasy-vii-remake-original-soundtrack\/1513522478\" data-lasso-id=\"177809\"><em>Final Fantasy VII Remake <\/em><\/a>(Nobuo Uematsu &amp; co.), <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/kingdom-hearts-iii-ii-8-unchained-%CF%87-union-%CF%87-cross-original\/1536667542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/kingdom-hearts-iii-ii-8-unchained-%CF%87-union-%CF%87-cross-original\/1536667542\" data-lasso-id=\"177810\"><em>Kingdom Hearts III <\/em><\/a>(Yoko Shimomura &amp; co.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/nier-automata-original-soundtrack\/1212176108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/nier-automata-original-soundtrack\/1212176108\" data-lasso-id=\"177811\">Nier: Automata<\/a> (Keiichi Okabe); Atlus\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/persona-5-original-soundtrack\/1226945984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/persona-5-original-soundtrack\/1226945984\" data-lasso-id=\"177812\"><em>Persona 5 <\/em><\/a>(Shoji Meguro); Xbox\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/halo-combat-evolved-original-soundtrack\/1448060862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/halo-combat-evolved-original-soundtrack\/1448060862\" data-lasso-id=\"177813\">Halo<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Martin O\u2019Donnell &amp; co.) and PlayStation\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/the-last-of-us-video-game-soundtrack\/655118434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/ca\/album\/the-last-of-us-video-game-soundtrack\/655118434\" data-lasso-id=\"177814\">The Last of Us<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Gustavo Santaolalla) are just some of the games with outstanding soundtracks currently on music streaming services. While there are certainly some omissions from these catalogues (the lack of the first two <em>Kingdom Hearts <\/em>titles is especially disappointing to me), there\u2019s undeniably still <em>a lot<\/em> of stellar tracks represented there. In any event, it\u2019s <em>far\u00a0<\/em>better than nothing, which is what Nintendo offers.<\/p>\n<p>I definitely don\u2019t just speak for myself when I say that this music is extremely meaningful. <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/07\/10\/boss-fight-books-final-fantasy-vi-sebastian-deken-review\/\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2021\/07\/10\/boss-fight-books-final-fantasy-vi-sebastian-deken-review\/\" data-lasso-id=\"177793\">Uematsu\u2019s incredible <em>Final Fantasy <\/em>music<\/a>, in particular, has played an integral role in my life. For me, the emotional power of music is felt all the more for gaming OSTs, based on the amount of time I spend with a game, its world and its characters. Being able to take out my phone and throw on some <em>Final Fantasy VII <\/em>music is extremely cathartic; all of the nostalgia tied to that seminal game comes rushing in. It\u2019s consoling when I\u2019m sad, thrilling when I\u2019m excited, and all-around just a big part to who I am. The impact of having that music quickly accessible right from my phone can\u2019t be understated. Similarly, I know there are many <em>Sonic<\/em> fans, including one of my close friends, who felt similarly when Sega released a nearly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UGTlBHNvjsU&amp;t=1086s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UGTlBHNvjsU&amp;t=1086s\" data-lasso-id=\"177794\"> two-hour anniversary concert for free<\/a>. The list goes on.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Casey Edwards feat. Ali Edwards - Devil Trigger [Official Music Video]\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8k6GC5NtuAg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All of this also just helps honour the work of the artists. As I was writing this piece, I saw the official <em>Devil May Cry\u00a0<\/em>account <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ComposerCasey\/status\/1489670128950120452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ComposerCasey\/status\/1489670128950120452\" data-lasso-id=\"177795\">retweet composer Casey Edwards<\/a>, who shared that February 2022 marked the fifth anniversary of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/devilmaycry.fandom.com\/wiki\/Devil_Trigger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/devilmaycry.fandom.com\/wiki\/Devil_Trigger\" data-lasso-id=\"177796\">Devil Trigger<\/a>\u201d from\u00a0<em>Devil May Cry V<\/em>. Immediately, that reminded me of an absolute banger that song is and compelled me to listen to it. Thankfully, Capcom has had the song available on both YouTube and streaming services for years now, so I could immediately celebrate alongside Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lighthearted example, but for a more touching, take <em>Final Fantasy XIV<\/em>. I\u2019m slowly going through the saga (I\u2019m finally on <em>Shadowbringers<\/em>) and am absolutely adoring Masayashi Soken\u2019s scores; they\u2019re a key part of why the game\u2019s emotional narrative hits so hard. What\u2019s more, <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/us\/search?term=final%20fantasy%20XIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/us\/search?term=final%20fantasy%20XIV\" data-lasso-id=\"178167\">all of the scores pre-<em>Endwalker<\/em><\/a>, the latest expansion,<em>\u00a0<\/em>are streaming, so I can continue to enjoy the game even when I\u2019m not actually playing it. (<em>Endwalker<\/em>\u2018s OST, thankfully, <a href=\"https:\/\/na.finalfantasyxiv.com\/lodestone\/topics\/detail\/cb6bbecd2450e1c05549b65e29d45c44eec8e570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/na.finalfantasyxiv.com\/lodestone\/topics\/detail\/cb6bbecd2450e1c05549b65e29d45c44eec8e570\" data-lasso-id=\"178168\">comes to streaming later this month<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0<em>Shadowbringers<\/em>\u2018 soundtrack might just be, in some ways, the game\u2019s most meaningful, as Soken revealed last year that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/final-fantasy-xiv-composer-masayoshi-soken-reveals-cancer-diagnosis-2942462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/final-fantasy-xiv-composer-masayoshi-soken-reveals-cancer-diagnosis-2942462\" data-lasso-id=\"177798\">h<\/a>e composed the final tracks<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/final-fantasy-xiv-composer-masayoshi-soken-reveals-cancer-diagnosis-2942462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/final-fantasy-xiv-composer-masayoshi-soken-reveals-cancer-diagnosis-2942462\" data-lasso-id=\"177821\"> while in a hospital battling cancer alone<\/a> during COVID. It was a profoundly moving story that saw <em>XIV<\/em> director Naoki Yoshida, fans and composers alike <a href=\"https:\/\/massivelyop.com\/2021\/06\/07\/40-musicians-collab-on-medley-to-welcome-back-final-fantasy-xiv-composer-soken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/massivelyop.com\/2021\/06\/07\/40-musicians-collab-on-medley-to-welcome-back-final-fantasy-xiv-composer-soken\/\" data-lasso-id=\"177799\">tearfully celebrating his return<\/a>. Now, it\u2019s impossible to say whether Nintendo would have made music available had such a heartfelt story applied to one of its own games, but in the case of\u00a0<em>XIV<\/em>, at least, that was never a concern. Soken\u2019s story adds so much more weight to his work, and I\u2019m grateful that it\u2019s so readily available for fans.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FFXIV&#039;s Composer Masayoshi Soken speech at the Fan Fest\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8Ze1LoN3_L4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course, GilvaSunner isn\u2019t the only video game music channel; there are others you can find for some Nintendo music. I definitely am going to. But it shouldn\u2019t come to that! We shouldn\u2019t have to scour the web to find particular songs, YouTubers shouldn\u2019t have to try to help out only to be punished for doing nothing wrong, and artists shouldn\u2019t have their work inaccessible to their audiences. And unlike GilvaSunner, Nintendo would actually profit from doing this; it would obviously make money from licensing the songs or even selling them outright. Doing so would also help promote the games while earning goodwill from fans. It\u2019s not at all unreasonable or unrealistic to ask this of Nintendo.<\/p>\n<p>Having said all of this, am I optimistic that the Japanese gaming giant will someday change its tune? Sadly, no, but I\u2019d love to be wrong. If nothing else, though, this just makes me appreciate the work of people like GilvaSunner even more. A lot of fond memories came from that channel, and I\u2019m grateful for that.
