If you use a recent version of Microsoft Word included as part of a\u00a0Microsoft 365<\/a> (formerly known as Office 365) subscription or as a standalone app purchased from the Mac App Store or Microsoft Store on Windows, it\u2019s easy to keep it up-to-date. Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n

How to Update Word 365 on Windows<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re running Microsoft Word as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription<\/a>, it\u2019s easy to update the app. First, open the Word application. Navigate to the \u201cHome\u201d screen where you load documents. If you just opened the app, you\u2019re already there. If you\u2019re editing a document click \u201cFile\u201d in the tab bar.<\/p>\n

In the sidebar on the Home screen that appears, click \u201cAccount.\u201d<\/p>\n

You\u2019re now on the \u201cAccount\u201d page. Look in the right column of options and click the \u201cOffice Updates\u201d button. In the menu the appears below it, click \u201cUpdate Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Office will check for updates and install them if necessary. If you have the latest version of Word, you\u2019ll see a message that says \u201cYou\u2019re up to date!\u201d In the future, you can turn on automatic updates<\/a> by selecting the same \u201cOffice Updates\u201d button and selecting \u201cEnable Updates.\u201d<\/p>\n

How to Update Word 365 on Mac<\/h2>\n

To update Microsoft Word that\u2019s part of a Microsoft 365 subscription on a Mac, first open the Word app. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, click \u201cHelp,\u201d and then select \u201cCheck For Updates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Office will open Microsoft AutoUpdate to check for updates, then download and install any available updates. Once you\u2019re running the latest version of Word, you\u2019ll see a message that says \u201cAll apps are up-to-date.\u201d<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re done, close AutoUpdate, and you\u2019re ready to get back to writing.<\/p>\n

How to Update Word Purchased From an App Store<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve downloaded or purchased Microsoft Word as a standalone app from the Mac App store<\/a> or the Microsoft Store<\/a> on Windows, you can update Word from the store app itself.<\/p>\n

On a Mac, open the App Store and click \u201cUpdates\u201d in the sidebar. Locate the \u201cWord\u201d app, and if there\u2019s an \u201cUpdate\u201d button located beside it, click it to install updates.<\/p>\n

How to Update Legacy Versions of Word<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re running an older version of Word, Microsoft provides standalone installation files<\/a> for Windows on its website. It also provides instructions on how to check for updates<\/a> on several older versions of Word, but note that Office 2010 and earlier are no longer supported<\/a>, so Microsoft encourages you to upgrade<\/a> to a Microsoft 365 subscription.
